Punk and New Wave thread.

Funnily enough I've just been reminiscing with an old mate of mine who went to lots of gigs i did. We both saw Crass at the Mayflower club in Gorton and at another small club in Hulme but we can't remember the name, can you?

My mate thinks it was possibly UMIST but i don't...
will it have been the old polytechnic building?
do you remember it?
set a bit back off oxford road and round the corner.
not technically hulme but very close.
cavendish house it was called.

1980 they played there and the mayflower.

Had it on the background while doing some work, so didn’t listen to it too carefully, but it sounds good! Very Sonic Youth to my ears, but also some Sugarcubes in there too. I’ll definitely go back and listen to it properly.
nice one.
it grows.

it's worth actually watching it too.

i think the first song is the most sonic youth-like.
it's not all like that though.
there's more to it

Deffo not Polly mate, Saw Dead Kennedys there in 1980 as well as going to several other gigs, really good for gigs, only held 650. Kennedy gig was my favourite punk gig despite them not being anywhere near my fave band. Awesome gig.

I'll ask a mate who's a walking punk encyclopedia, he'll deffo know.

Crass only played the Mayfair in 1980. They did play the Poly in 78.

Could it have been the Russell Club/PSV? Although I think they stopped live gigs end of 1979. Also possible, Hulme Labour Club, The Squat(not Hulme), or The Oaks (not Hulme). These all put on leftfield punky gigs late 70s/early 80s.

i don't think crass ever played anywhere other than the poly and the mayflower/funhouse (a few times), mate.

edit:
i'll ask

My mate confirmed that we saw Crass at Mayflower twice. I didn't see them at Polly. Club i couldn't remember name of was Russell club in Hulme, later became Caribbean club before being demolished. Saw one or two gigs there, can't remember who. My memory ain't what it used to be, mind you I'm going back 45 years

i ruled it out because you said small venue,
but yep,
you are correct...

(anarchists on a tuesday evening with nothing better to do than consult their old diaries)
= from the horse's mouth...

19th january 1979 "the factory" manchester.

which confused me,
it's before my time
until i did a quick google images search...

This mentions a venue called the Fun House
I've never heard of that.
ahhh, also mentions the factory gig.

if you'd posted this earlier we wouldn't have been doing all this running around, you slow **** :)

(the funhouse and the mayflower were one in the same btw)

edit:
the trades club in hebden bridge!
what a venue that was.
had a city mate who always drove us over there.
saw some right good gigs there, including crass.

I'm a young FOC so the only time I was in the Factory/Russell was in the 90s when it was a dub club then later a community furniture outlet before it was raized for student accomodation (probably).

i lived in the crescents in hulme in the mid-80's.
it was called the psv at that point in time.
more like dance hall and roots reggae.

they only sold 2 drinks...
red stripe for the blokes.
20/20 for the ladies.

upstairs was a small kitchen and smoking room.
they only sold rice and curried goat.
i don't believe in curried goat but spent many a fine evening up there,
some right characters.

my claim to fame is that i took nico to the psv,
just me and her, more than once.
met her in the spinners and became pals for a month or so.

At a gig or out in public?
That’s awful either way :(
just heard from someone in rubella.
again,
this is not yet public information...

looks like colin may have died from pneumonia,
water on the lung,
caused by a broken rib puncturing it.
no postmortem yet though.

let's keep this amongst ourselves for now please folks.

i looked.
it seems you are spot on, mate.

here are the first 3 in order of appearance...

I have to jump in here and drag the thread back a few days (apologies. I'm out in the wilderness for the summer).
I still have copies of all three of these 7" singles that I can't wait to get back to the real world and play.

just had 20mins with black flag.

Black Flag were my obsession for a few years. First heard on Peel then mail order vinyl.
I used to write to Henry Rollins and he scribbled back quite a few times with posters, stickers and recommendations for other bands. Jack Brewer from Saccharine Trust wrote whilst BF were on tour.
Wasn't over keen on the later BF stuff, though still have my bike jacket with the logo and a pic of Henry shouting in to a mike on the back. I stripped off the rendition of Killing Joke first album and the Damned logo from the Black Album to make way.
American punk still always on my playlists...
