Best player from our doldrums years (1980 to roughly 2009)

Excluding the post takeover players.

I think we’ve had some really good players.

Personal favourites:
Coton
Phealan
Hendry
Curle
Distin
Gaudino
Rocastle
Flitcroft
Berkovic
Benarbia
David White
Annelka
Micheal Johnson
Wanchope(away at Leeds is still the best centre forward display i’ve seen).
SWP
Elano
I was at that Leeds game in the Leeds main stand ‘sat on my hands’. Remember Wanchope being mega and not long after his great performance v Sunderland

Luckily enough I was in the away end. It was what? 25 years ago, and still remember it now.

It is hard to judge "best"

I would go in date order Clive Wilson, Mick McCarthy, Paul Stewart, David White, Niall Quinn, Curle, Horlock, Weaver, SWP, Barton, Corluka, Ireland.

No Kinkladze? Some great players there though.....and Joey Barton

Anelka was a few levels above and our best striker

(I thought Weah would be)

Distin the most underated defender in PL history is also a good pick.

James was our nest keeper

Horlock was a great midfielder

Was gonna say - Dunne got a ton of POTYs, but for me Distin was better every single season. James was quality, Anelka too.

Other than those - Wright-Phillips was special, and Elano and Petrov had quality.

Back from the pre2000 years - the u21s group in the middle/late 80s, plus Curle and Hendry from the early 90s for me.

Clive Wilson was a great technical player who would have thrived under Pep.
I though Horlock was more important and consistent in his latter period, and would have Curle for the same reason before that. Looking back 30 years, even though Kinky was technically the best.

When SWP left Barton stepped up and dragged us kicking and screaming though games, 05/06 and most of 06/07. Distin after him in that period, then Dunne and James initially.

Those years cover my childhood and beyond until I was nearly 40. I wouldn’t call it doldrum, I would call it a badge of honour!

Georgi Kinkladze.

I’m convinced Swales was about to sell Lake, probably to Liverpool, when he got injured.
