Ha! I was being sarky on the Morrissey cancellations comments (even bitter considering my experiences of 12 cancellations!)
Although I think one thing to mention is the rawness of bands that made them so exciting.
I first saw James in 1985 (supporting The Smiths as it happens) and 5 times before 1990 and many, many times since including last October in Boston and yes they are a bigger band (musician wise) and way more polished but it’s that initial rawness that they had that gave them that initial edginess and excitement that is missing.
You mention Depeche Mode from the 90’s but not 82-86 when at their most commercial. Same with The Charlatans - yes they can be seen today and of course minus two original members, but that spunkiness that they had isn’t there as it is too polished (not a complaint, an observation)
And for every Charlatans and James there’s a Happy Mondays flogging the dead horse.
I didn’t see any Roses comeback gigs but I did see them at Blackpool (brilliant) in 89 and Spike Island (don’t believe the hype) in 90 and that was enough for me. Yet you say the comeback gigs were better than the 95 Apollo gig, missing out 87-90 completely.
Was Ian Brown’s voice sounding better in the late 1980’s in The International 2 than it was in the 2010’s at City’s ground or Heaton Park?
I did not see the Roses at that time as I was born in 79. It was 94 or 95 when I first seen them. Reni had left.
The voice is the key thing as that will go, especially with all the drugs and smoking. That's why Dave Gahan had singing lessons in his 40's and 50's. I would be shocked if Liam has not been seeing a vocal coach.
My initial reply was to the poster who said people should have gone back in the day. I don't understand why. There is absolutely no reason for Oasis not to put on a better performance now, than in their apparent prime. Last time I seen them at Heaton Park, they were shite. My mate went last night and he said it was glorious.
There is far too much negativity in this thread. People saying it will not be the same, it was better in my day. My ethos has always been 'if today is not your day, you might as well be dead'.
There are loads of people complaining about people recording stuff on their phones, as if they have a right to dictate how people enjoy themselves.
Now I went to Knebworth and there was not a single camera phone in sight. Now, I really wish that I had a phone back then as half the people I went with are now dead. I have fading memories of that gig. In fact that are more emotions and feelings rather that definitive memories. I would love to have some recordings of the shenanigans as my memories are only going to fade further.
As for Depeche Mode, SOFAD was their creative peak. Black Celebration, Music for the Masses, Violator and then SOFAD was the golden run. If Depeche Mode had carried on in the same Vince Clark vein, they would have not made it to the 90's.
