Nike wanted the England / FA contract and bought Umbro to get itUmbro technically don't exist as their own company anymore. They were bought by Nike in 2007. All those great kits we had in the late 2000's-early 2010's The Tailored By Umbro kits the reason Umbro could make those kits was because they had the Nike money behind them. However by 2012 The Umbro division of Nike still hadn't made a profit so Nike sold Umbro to The Iconix Brand Group. Nike bought Umbro for £450M and sold them 5 years later for just £225M.
Nike still held the rights for the clubs who Umbro make kits for and that's why we changed to Nike in 2013
Umbro founded by Wallace and Harold Humphreys in their parents' pub in Wilmslow, the name came from hUMphreys and BROthers. The first instance of a club using “sponsored” kit was the 1934 FAC Final, both clubs wore Umbro supplied kit The Humphreys were City fans and thats why we had a long association with them until interrupted by the Kappa contract then reestablished in 2009 for a short while when under Nike until they sold in 2012 to Iconix
