I know we can’t say definitively, but I very much doubt that there will ever be another test match like Headingley '81.

It’s still the only instance of a team winning a test match, after following on in this country.
And Stokes managed to lose a test where he enforced the follow on, the one run loss after declaring too.

It’s close very close watched botham from 79 he was some player a big game player especially against the Aussies!

Stokes also big game player won games single handed..

Stat wise botham as a wicket taker is far superior getting 27 5 wicket innings and 4 10 wicket innings!
runs wise think Stoke just edges it! Stokes Bowling now for me is the best he has been but he has only 8 5 wicket hauls, Also his captaincy far better than Bothams.

55% Botham
45% Stokes

In the Botham era the stand out cricketing nation was the West Indies and they used to thrash England on a regular basis. Botham's batting average against them was 15 and his bowling average (per wicket) was 50. Also the Aussies were in the Kerry Packer era and were unable to utilise their best players.

So; what are we thinking? Bat the innings out (presuming Stokes will continue his innings today), and take a chance on the Manchester weather? Or bat for maybe another 60-90 minutes and declare (if we last that long, our tail isn't very "waggy")?

Oh, bat on and make them suffer.

I think Stokes is quite happy to take a risk. That’s what winners do. For me, Stokes is a great skipper.

I am a Stokes fan, he needs to forget flying insects and putting in the oppos on flat tracks though.
Working out okay in this series, and against a decent side, not a bunch of whipping boys. 2-1 up, and in a decent position to, at least, not lose this one. Which would be a great position to be in going to the Oval next week.

I know, he got lucky here in Manchester, the scores might well have been the other way round without the injury to Pant.

Yes; might. Good players can have off days (witness Brook scoring just 3). There's no guarantee that Pant would have scored big (and he did bag a fifty). But okay; I'm not going to argue all day about it. We all want the best for the team.

The Kerry Packer cricket series only lasted two years, and there were players from all countries involved, not just Australia.

If I remember correctly, Alan Knott Tony Greig and Derek Underwood were signed up to it, as was Viv Richards, Clive Lloyd and several other West Indians, so it’s not really fair to use that as a way to belittle Botham's achievements, though I will concede that if the World Series hadn’t taken Greig from England availablity, Botham might not have had his chance in test cricket as early as he did.

Brook was having a slog, different situation entirely. Tbf Ben's dismissal of Rahul arguably set up this very likely England victory though (sun breaking through in Stockport finally so hopefully we'll get well past a 200 lead.)
