Hope Warner now appreciates that if you adopt the Billy Big Bollox persona you need to be able to walk the walk.

He makes a good story with the Ashes coming up and probably facing some of his old adversaries like Anderson.

But he's past it really. He didn't even get picked up in the IPL auction.

Exactly the same story with Steve Smith. More there as a known name than being any good at T20.

Look at his comparison against Root in T20 Internationals. You wouldn't believe that Smith was the one who kept his position in the Australia squad for so long. Mediocre average and middling strikerate.

For the first test, I think it will be:

1. Crawley
2. Duckett
3. Pope
4. Root
5. Brook
6. Stokes (C)
7. J Smith (WK)
8. Carse
9. Atkinson
10. Archer/Wood
11. Tongue/Bashir

Sadly, I don’t think we can risk playing Archer and Wood in the same side.

We have to if we want to win the Ashes, it's that simple really
Pace with Bounce, the good old chin music scares all the top batsmen, even the Aussies in their own backyard don't like it around their ears

You have to manage bowlers work loads though especially those as fragile as Wood and Archer.

If you play both in the first test you have to be prepared that you may need to rest both of them at the same time and therefore leaving England short on pace. So it's a gamble.

What’s happened to Ollie Stone? He used to be pretty rapid.

Injured for 14 weeks about 14 weeks ago. He might make a comeback at some point in the Hundred.
Anyone we have that is genuinely quick is made of glass.

We need to do what India have done and create a national bowling academy, with the best coaching and medical teams to develop genuine pace from players who don’t break down.

Play them both first match and try to start with a win, then alternate them for the other tests.

Lancashire don't have one delivery playing a home game in the Yorkshire Dales again. Not an issue for Ashes fans.

Past an present Lanky lads get 80 in the 100.

Woods and Archer have to play 2 or 3 tests together, then maybe you rest one and bring in another spinner
100% both have to play the 1st test or face chasing the rest of the series,

I would go with Archer, Wood, Atkinson, Bashir, Stokes

Yep. It should not be forgotten that Wood is getting on now. 36 in Jan?

We need Root to come good in Aus which he hasn’t done so far.

Root will be under a lot of pressure. The Aussies will continue to talk about his record there, no century etc and how he isn't one of the greats. The rest of the England team have to take the pressure off him. He still feels like the key wicket, even when we do have some good batting in Duckett, Brook and Smith.

That's why I would like to have seen more from Crawley and Pope this series. The fact the ball moves off the pitch and not in the air as much would suggest they'd bat better over there with their general weaknesses. But they've got an abysmal record in Australia - particularly Pope!

Had Bethell stepped up in the last test we might have seen him chucked straight in. Pope is a shit vice captain as well.

I disagree about Root. I expect the Aussies to be very respectful about his record, acknowledge that it's right up there, and just raise (or a hack will ask a question) the lack of a century there as something they'd like to keep intact.

There's nothing much to be gained from trying to needle Root.

I remember the Aussies talking down Cook before the 2010/11 series. He scored 766 runs @127.66.

I see it as if the Aussies are already chirping up about Root, then they know he's the major threat
The Aussies are masters of sledging and try to break you before a ball is bowled

England is a very good team, but when we have Archer and Wood then we are a world-class side and an danger to them, Also, 3 or 4 know this maybe their last ashes down under and want to prove doubters wrong

Just finished work and watching a bit of the 100 at the other swamp (my youngest is there so I thought I’d try and see him on the telly) - fuck me that on screen scoreboard, going to bed with a migraine now

Wish you could take any amount of players to the Ashes like the Lions Rugby tour.

Tyrone Mills would definitely be useful for a game.

One of the best fast bowler performances I've seen in T20 in a while.
