Hiking thread

@Cityfan and others....
On page 16 I asked about walking the coast of Portugal.
I've just booked 9 days walking the Rota Vicentina which incorporates the
Fishermans Trail. 11 days including travel in October.
I land at Lisbon and then a bus to Porto Covo, walk to the Penisula and then a 4 hour bus ride back to Lisbon.

I've only booked flights and the bus. The rest I'll make up as I go along.
Have a great time, it's a lovely area.

Pen-y-fan next Sunday morning in the dark to catch the sun rise. Can’t wait.
Are you doing the round? There’s nothing to raise the heart rate with exposure like on Crib Goch, Striding Edge or Sharp Edge.

Have you done the north ridge of Tryfan and then up onto Glyder Fach via Bristley Ridge? Probably my favourite day out for grade 1 scrambling routes. An absolute classic.

Just got sharp edge to do, hopefully this year and no haven’t done Tryfan.

Sunday morning didn’t go as planned. Watched the match Saturday evening in the pub on the corner and the beers were flowing too well, back at the campsite we had a few more.
Next morning struggled up at 4:30 and set off but the wife’s hangover kicked in as we got 1 mile in, the rest continued on while we just chilled in the field her half asleep lol.

Never mind, plenty more sunrises to come and will do it again at some point.

Just a recommendation for anyone living close the West Yorkshire moors and the Calder Valley . His guides opened up the landscape for me that's right on my doorstep, so much so that I no longer feel compelled to thrash up to the Dales of the Lakes, as I understandably did in my impetuous youth .

That looks ace. Definitely buying the West York’s Moors book. We live in north Leeds and I’m always torn between the big drive and staying local.

If you’re looking for a great great grade one scramble and don’t want to schlepp too far I can heartily recommend Wildboar Clough from Crowden on the Woodhead Pass.

There’s a lovely horseshoe route that I did with my 9 year daughter and her mates.

They loved the scrambling with no exposure to have to worry about.

Make sure your nav is up to scratch though if there’s any chance of bad weather. The moors at the top are pretty featureless.

Exposed ledges on a hangover is never a good idea. There’s a biological thing to do with dehydration, liquid in your ears and balance/vertigo that can sometimes be a bad combination. The hill will always be there again another day.

That's a good shout . I was always scared of venturing onto Bleaklow but his Pink book covers that moor , Kinder and the Sheffield Edges and has given me so much confidence

The first time I did that Wildboar Clough route I was by myself on a summer weekday. I didn’t see a single soul on the whole walk of about 3 hours until I got back to my car which was nice in one way but also slightly disconcerting.

Huh ! Yes . Sounds like Glyndwrs Way . Lots of sheep but no hikers for the whole LDP . Brilliant walk though .

Sagres, about as far South as you can go, is a stunning penninsula. Nice little cafe on the beach as well.

Funny you should post today as I have just hours ago, extended it by a day.
I'm now doing Sagres to Lagos as apparently it's a stunning coastal walk.
It means I have a 19 mile day earlier on in the walk but it will he worth it.
I get to Lagos jump on a bus to Lisbon for a 6am flight out. I'm to old to sleep in airports but hey.

Yes that’s the one. The walk is via a very distinct ravine/stream. You’re essentially walking up either side of a stream. There’s a couple places that you need to climb up but the rest of it you can avoid any hands on rock if you want to.

Poor bloke died on Crib Goch last weekend. Not for those who aren’t prepared.

RIP.
In some ways it can happen to anyone who slips or isn’t paying attention. But yes there are people up there who aren’t prepared for the route. It’s not to be taken lightly. But it’s also great fun.

@Cityfan I'm currently in Porto Covo. Tomorrow I start the Rota Vicentina which I believe you suggested somewhile back. (Fishermans Trail, Portugal)
8 days, 118 miles. For various reasons I've condensed 3 days into 2 so missing out Almograve. It means doing 20 miles one day, hmmmmm.
I'll hopefully post photos each evening.
That said I can't post a photo of the route at the moment so it could go downhill.

Hope you have a great time and the weather is good to you. We cycled it last year and really enjoyed it.
Went to Northern Portugal this year which was great for cycling but a bit sore on the bum with all the cobbled roads.

Day 1 of the Rota Vicentina done. The stupid phone won't let me post 1 photo !
Anyway 13 miles mainly on the beach or cliff edge, 25°and no shade. 2 litres of water drank on the walk now in the b&b and I've still not peed !
Off to Cavaleiro tomorrow 14 miles and just as hot
