ISPs use cheap function starved routers to customers because they are free, DD-WRT replaces the in built software on compatible routers and sort of takes them from a 3 inch on the slack to a raging 6 incher you can hang a wet donkey jacket on.

adding VPN functionality, ad blocking etc etc. I'm not a full geek and most of it goes above my head but i believe it uses real magic to make ads fall into the internet abyss before hitting our screens

Only problem I'm finding with this is you can't stream it the tv? Without screen mirroring your whole phone?

I guess you'll have to use screen mirroring.

I currently use my old Samsung phone that has a smart view option to link it to the TV and watch YouTube, stream sport etc.

Was considering YouTube Premium myself now with the ads situation…

But £13!!! Thought it would be £5 or something.

I thought fuck it and was going to bite the bullet and subscribe which I thought would be £1.99 per month.
I nearly had a heart attack.
When a longish ad starts I press back and usually a new ad appears which is 5 seconds or so.

A bit more involved but i have a DD_WRT capable spare router (It runs firmware not intended for it to run adding functionality it was not intended. (strictly speaking I think its a small linux distro)https://dd-wrt.com/

A Pi-Hole works similar magic which can be a lot easier to work on

Anyone else notice the massive recent increase in ads when viewing Youtube? It's fucking awful. Worse than watching commercial TV.

It's recently to the point that a 1 hour Youtube viewing session mandates about 25 minutes of unskippable commercial content (or maybe more).

With any luck whatsoever another platform will emerge to offer Youtube competition. Fucking waste of my time to watch commercials for 25%+ for the content I'm interested in.

I have been losing the plot over the same issue. Beyond a fucking joke. I have a pathological hatred of ads, so this is very distressing and my shouting out obscenities ratio, per hour, has nearly tripled. Something needs to be done.

I pay for YouTube Premium in a round about way, works out for me at £40 a year but do agree, without ad-blocker or Paying for premium the ADs have now become rather intrusive and ruin the experience.


The cynic in me would suggest that is exactly how google want it to be to force as many people onto premium as possible.

I watch it in the Brave browser on my phone. On my Fire TV Cube I installed an app called Smarttubenext which stops all the adverts
