TV Series

Sky have relentlessly been pushing their re-boot of Never Mind the Buzzcocks. It seems they're into the 5th series already, that I was totally unaware of until recently. I was a huge fan when Mark Lamarr and particularly Simon Amstell were the hosts, so thought I'd give it a watch.

My God, if any programme should have been consigned to history, it's this. Absolutely awful. Desperately trying to recreate the exact same format that was funny and relevant 30 years ago. I almost felt embarrassed for them.
It was great with Sean Hughes too, I keep seeing the trailer for it but it just looks shyte.

Interesting read from some of the posters about 'Task'.

I agree about the view of Ruffalo's acting ability in dramas. There is a Humanity, I think he brings to characters but, then again, it's only a step removed from himself as a person.

However, and this the main point, 'Task' itself, is a nothing story. Or, I should say, nothing we haven't seen done better before as an idea. So, it makes me wonder if posters are conflating Ruffalo's acting ability with the plot, which was quite mish-mashed. I didn't find any polt reasoning or even background explanation to why main separate stories concluded as suddenly as they did.

Carrying a show doesn't make a poor show, overall, a good show in my personal opinion.

The Sinner - On Netflix

I'm not sure about this series to be honest

Acting is fabulous, the script is believable, and character development is excellent.

But it's a slow burner... which I'm more than OK with... but that may turn off some viewers.

Lastly, the main character's dependency on female domination sex... for me... was a real turn off. All of the Fem-Dom stuff could have been removed from the series with no impact on the overall story whatsoever.

7/10 - would have scored far higher if not for the female domination sex stuff. If you can overcome this issue, it's a very, very good series.

Only recently finished off the original series of DEXTER
So now started New blood upto episode 4 already.still loving our Dexter

Anybody watching Celebrity Traitors? It's proven to be a big family hit in my household. The celebrities are very bad at playing the game
It's good harmless fun.

My theory is that they were under instructions that the two biggest stars, Fry and Ross, couldn't be voted out until they'd got their money's worth out of them.

Yep got into traitors only this year as something to watch with my teenage daughter (she’s given up on Disney) so we’ve binge watched the first 3 seasons and now on the celebrity one, it’s brilliant, they are so out their comfort zones it’s great viewing, I love the fact Alan Carr has gone from a sweating wreck to a ruthless bastard and Jo the rugby player looks like he wants to rip Jonathan Ross a new one.

No chance pal it’s been played straight and it’s great viewing, I hope they do a second season and get Bob Mortimer and Richard Ayoade on it.

Hmmmm.

As a menopausal woman myself I really wanted to like it however I thought it was really cliched and slightly cringey in places
Yeah, thought it was just a bit unnecessarily too ‘gritty’ for its own good at times. It could still have been an enjoyable watch without that.

Agreed.

I've watched 2 eps and it's lazy writing from the off.
Will it put you off the new Mick Heron adaptation starting on Apple on Wednesday mate, Down Cemetery Road?

I’m gonna give it a go, and re SH I’m really looking forward to the last episode this week, though can see there’s a few of you on here who don’t rate it. What I will say is, it’s not and never has been “realistic” but I think its script and performances are actually quite funny. And with Oldham and Scott-Thomas I can’t think of two actors I’d rather watch at the moment, both (still) at the top of their game.

On another note, was watching the movie The Conversation the other day and was struck by how much the soundtrack reminded me of Severance. The similarities of some of the piano motifs is eerie. Have since found out the Severance team have actually acknowledged the ahem “inspiration”.

You know what? I'm quite the 'once bitten, twice shy' kind of guy when it comes to bad writing and if I know a team is associated with a poor project, it's extremely rare they come good. Not just the writers, but the lack of oversight on a project.

I know I will kick myself if I give time to something that's not going meet my expectations and I've plenty of experience in giving things a chance!!

But, saying that, it will depend if it, clearly, doesn't take itself seriously. I know 'Slow Horses' doesn't, but it's poorly done and only just met the bar before this series.

All to say, I just don't know if I will commit to the upcoming show!

Heron doesn’t write the tv scripts though.

Watched the final episode of The Americans last night. It was a very emotional end to what I think has been a brilliant series.
I think I must be due a rewatch of that, I know I enjoyed it very much years ago but I can't remember the end. It was the 2nd big series I watched, Boardwalk Empire being the first.

Yes we’ve only watched this series of Traitors. It is indeed brilliant and if you aren’t already watching it, you don’t know what you’re missing! Best thing I’ve watched in years.

No. Indeed.
But I don’t feel that alters either of my points, firstly about my interest in watching the new series starting Wednesday based on one of his other books, nor secondly my enjoyment of the scripts for Slow Horses.
