The Squad planning thread

Wharton is a good player but he’s not a very good dueller. We need someone that’s willing to get stuck in and with Nico adding progressive passes to his game we need someone that’s good in tight spaces. I haven’t seen much of Anderson but it seems like he fits the bill

So basically an athletic guy like baleba. Haven’t seen Anderson play but starts look good. Wharton is left footed though which is importantly too to have

Sounds like Inter are going to pay the 15m for Akanji so i wonder how much Ake goes for? The same?
CaughtOffside claim there will be a major ‘battle’ for Ake’s services this winter, with Juventus and Palace currently his ‘most serious suitors’. Man City ‘are not actively pushing the player out’ but are ‘willing to entertain reasonable bids’.

They have set Ake’s asking price at €30-35million (up to £31m / $40m), having originally signed him from Bournemouth for £41m in August 2020

Good idea to let him go and get some money back.

That would be a huge fee and all profit for the books?

Not seen anything to suggest we want Guehi.Or any centre back come to that. Think next season we’ll go with Dias, Khusonov, Gvardiol, Stones and Reis.
That would necessitate extending Stones’ contract, and irrespective of how well he performs this season, I suspect we might not be tempted into that. That said, if both he and Ake left next summer, we would have a comparatively young back line, so one never knows.

If they both leave then I can see us buying a centre back. If only one leaves then probably not, Only issue might be if we extend Stones and sell Ake only leaves one left sided CB.

I think Silva and Stones will both leave next summer and Ake maybe even earlier, depending on game time in the coming weeks and prospective offers. Ake has only collected 391 minutes so far and is starting to drop down the pecking order for the Oranje, which, with the World Cup next summer, might influence his decision.

Our bigger issue remains with the homegrown requirement. Bah, after a blip, is performing well at Nice, and Reis is practically a mainstay at Girona, so both or either might come next summer, by which time they would both be 20. As I say, though, it doesn’t help with the requirement.

I cannot see it being on the £250K week that he's currently on but on greatly reduced salary maybe we will knowing he's not a regular starter. We will make savings on his amortsation and salary but most importantly when fit Stones is still a good player, easily 2 years left in him

Those being the operative words. He’ll be 32 come May and is very close to Silva, so I can see them both bowing out together before us and ahead of the World Cup, which tends to be a seminal event in players’ careers.
