16 | Rodri 2025/26

It's going to take time and it's going to need the right balance. Some players come back without a problem, others never fully recover. What concerns me, but I is probably entirely legitimate, is how often he says he's not feeling quite right. A big part of the recovery is trusting your body to have recovered. You'll feel niggles, it's football - you're rarely 100% physically fit. They don't always mean you're about to suffer something major. It's right at the moment to be cautious, but at some point he's going to have to just get back out there and trust that he'll be okay even if he's got a bit of pain elsewhere.

The fact he hasn't signed that contract should re-assure us that he certainly doesn't feel he's finished at the top level - he'd want the protection if he did!

Nico in recent weeks has gone up a level or two though. He has been superb in dictating the game from deep and reading the situation. With Rodri's return we'll have two fantastic options in the middle of the park.

Good news that he can continue to recover:

Rodri has not been called up to the latest spain squad.

I get the feeling this is gonna be his last season with us, unless im mistaken his contract is ticking down and he hasnt signed an extension and we wont want him going on a free.

Reminds me of when Sane was injured

Would be sad if we lost him after this season, not too many have left us when we wanted them to stay.
Him joining those cunts RM would be a kick in the bollocks as well, hopefully he stays

He’ll turn 30 next summer and while he may get back to performing at a high level, whether he can return to the apex is another matter, especially if he is forced to sit out the best part of two seasons.

More generally, the club needs to learn from the experience and never allow itself to become so entirely dependent on one player again, no matter how great. One could argue that we were rushed into his return and that was largely due to the fact that we were still unsure over Gonzalez’s merits, which was, in turn, a consequence of not having identified a suitable understudy to Rodri earlier. If we are learning, then we should be in the market this winter to sign the understudy to Gonzalez.

The talks might be City looking at how his injuries develop. For me, signing him up for another four years on a mega contract would be reckless.

There's no rush; he has a contract until 2027 (he'll be 31).

He'll ease back into things, and if all goes well, he'll be fresh and at 100% fitness from January/February onwards, the period when we'll need him most. Until then, the team is learning and getting used to playing without him.

An ACL rupture and operation is very precarious though. 1 in 5 sportsmen suffer re-rupture of the ACL.

Also from a City hierarchy point of view, they’ll want to see how Rodri’s body performs before offering him a contract extension in what I’m sure will be a very decent wage.

Maybe Rodri is just running down his contract the easy way? He has been great for us but this injury has looked like it has changed what he can do and for how long.

What a waste of a great player in his prime.

I’m still hopeful he can shake off these niggles and get back to 100% but I can understand the reluctance in throwing a big contract under his nose right now to sign. I’m sure if he can have a prolonged period of full fitness City won’t hesitate in getting a new contract over to him.

However, if, as you say, Rodri is running down; his contract down then throws up some very different dilemmas in terms of do we keep him till the contract expires in the hope he changes his mind and squeeze every last bit out of him on the pitch or do we cash in and get some money for him.

A 325k a week contract extension has been on the table since August. Whether it's us or Rodri holding off it hasn't been signed.
