26 | Savinho - 2025/26

My eyes do not lie to me, nothing you say will convince me he's at the level required to play for city and I've not seen enough from him to suggest he ever will be. He's ineffective on the ball, criminally lazy off it and not suited physically or mentally to play in the Premier League.

Does my head in when I see the 'Mahrez at 21' argument too because it's just clutching at straws. The two are incomparable - I bet you anything Savinho won't be anywhere near Mahrez at 26.

How on earth have you come to the conclusion of him being top 5-10 RW in the world? Because of a few assists (7 of his 10) against relegated or poor bottom-half sides last season? Sorry but that's a laughable statement.

All the new contract has done is given him comfort to not have to perform, it already looks as though he's less motivated/ interested after it.

He was 4th in Ballon D'or young player voting. The attackers ahead of him were Guler and Yamal, who are obviously better. Doue and Barcola are and Estevao will be if he keeps it up.

That's right wingers in his age bracket. Assuming they mature at relatively similar rates they likely end up in the 10 best RWs at their peaks.

He was in the La Liga TOTY at 19 and our top assister at 20. He's out of form and getting booed by his own fans may not help him out of it. He may even leave. But if he shows anything like the Girona form for another team it'll be another Palmer, Soriano is not necessarily wrong.

He may not be great in your eyes but I'm more inclined to trust Pep, Viana, Txiki and Soriano.

In the last couple of matches (Leverkusen, Leeds) there has been a lot of hostility from fans around me towards Savinho. Savinho got a lot of stick from the lower tier of the East Stand against Leverkusen, and lost confidence in that game. He was an unused sub. vs Leeds but loads of fans around me kept joking shouting ironically bring Savinho on! They thought it was a funny. I can't criticise people for something that they didn't do but I feel that had Savinho come on he would have got a lot of stick and booing.

We have done this before as a fanbase. We were notorious for being very harsh on players in the 1990s. This weekend, Thomas Frank said the fans who booed Vicario after his mistake vs Fulham were not proper Tottenham fans. We haven't got to the point yet, but I feel its close. Partly it's Pep's fault for playing an inadequate side against Leverkusen that exposed the attacking players.

This post is probably futile because once fans have formed their opinion of the player, they aren't going to change their mind until the player's form changes, but I hope that those that don't rate Savinho will bite their tongue when he plays and don't allow fans around them to boo him. This hasn't happened en masse yet but I can feel its close.

Savinho is in my opinion a very good player who is playing way below his potential due to lack of confidence and City fans are making life difficult for him. Nunes got a lot of stick but came through it because Pep had faith in him at right back, and now he is popular (generally, not completely!). Please don't make life difficult for Savinho. Support him. Think about it when he next comes on as a sub. I can't imagine that Pep is going to start him in the League again until he has at least had some good sub. appearances. He might play against Brentford in the League Cup though.

Honestly at this point, just play him as a sub when we are winning at RW only, LW is just a big waste of time.

We need to manage him as the backlash is getting vitriolic and he needs to be protected a bit.

Bobb is doing more than him, and should be the primary backup to Cherki.

Playing/performing for Girona in La liga and City in the Premier League are again absolutely incomparable, though you keep saying it like it's some kind of validation - there was a striker playing for Girona at the same time named Stuani who couldn't cut it for Middlesborough in the championship before going to Girona and scoring bucket loads of goals - see also Antony, Forlan etc.

Performing well in that league is not a surefire yardstick for performing in the Premier League but because it's the only bit of form he's shown in his career it's all you have to go off to try and defend his piss poor performances at City.

City have had plenty of 'average' players down the years who were loved by fans due to their commitment and hardwork.

Unfortunately, Savinho doesn't seem to show either of these two traits and is the reason I believe many fans are getting on his back. I think we could accept some of his sub par performances if he showed a little fight and bottle instead of whinging and wanting everything his own way.

He then has the audacity to throw his arms up to demand more from the fans despite him not bothering to do most things himself. It's a two-way street in my opinion and I'm sure if he worked a little harder for the team (or even just looked like he was interested in doing) most fans would not hesitate to get off his back and support him.

Spot on - I think he has been given a lot more opportunities than some. He perhaps would have been fine when we were dominating the league and had world class players in every position, we could have a player in that side who was a bit off form - but the reason we were unstoppable was we had players that worked harder than most opponents despite being far more skilled. As you rightly say down the years some players have had the fans supporting them when they weren't the best because they would give everything for 90mins plus. I think Savinho knows he's skilful but hasn't actually figured out that to be the best you have to continually make the hard yards even if a pass doesn't come - when he gets that he will obviously be some player - alternatively if he doesn't he will never be loved.

We are also still in a transition period where we are searching for a team identity as older players either depart or come towards the end of their time with us. We need every player working in a well oiled system but even Pep is struggling to find the correct system and lineup consistently. It will come.

I honestly don't believe any real fan especially on blue moon is being critical on a personal level, this is just about players at the highest level showing the reason why they are just that. Why they deserve all the trappings of being a modern player - wealth, women & adulation ha! When I played I got £48 per week and was often clipped around the head by the manager when I was lazy - mind you I was pretty average at best.

He had a good season last season in his first year with us! Just think his agent egging him on about spurs was a mistake! All his agent wanted was his player to get a pay rise so he can get a payment! That’s why for me some fans are on him and Savino lost his head been piss poor in the league! He won’t be going anywhere in January so let’s see if his form picks up!

Kopa Trophy top five 2024
1. Lamine Yamal (Spain, Barcelona)
2. Arda Güler (Türkiye, Real Madrid)
3. Kobbie Mainoo (England, Manchester United)
4. Savinho (Brazil, Girona / Manchester City)
5. Pau Cubarsí (Spain, Barcelona)
So 2 years ago he was on a list for top young talent , then the year after despite spending a whole season in the top league in the world and starting regularly he wasn't even in the top 10 , and this is being used as evidence he justifies a place in our squad?

He has definitely declined from the start of last season. The first few matches he looked very sharp. Took a penalty in the charity shield shoot out .
Not sure why he has regressed so much.
Funnily enough, I happened to spot the winners of the young player of the year, the same time as Mahrez won the senior award.
The winner that year Deli Alli.

I hope Savinho doesn't go down the same road

Yeah the season he joined a new club, in a new league, speaking a new language and was their top assister at 20. Having one of the world's best U21 wingers as a squad player isn't that dumb, and the fact most want him replaced by 25-27 year olds who've never put together a better season than he did at 19 doesn't hurt either. I get it people don't want another "project player", but I also think it's worth not just discarding the ones you have. I remember the Sane and Mahrez threads, they weren't full of growing praise for a fair while.

At this point it's just looking silly how many people try and discredit the lads potential when we a) bought him, b) refused to sell him, c) got big offers from other clubs.

I don't think he's the sort of guy that will take being booed by his own fans or having negative chants about him well or as motivation.

Definitely needs a break from the fans and a good run out in a functioning XI (like he got against Dortmund).

He'll blow hot and cold for a couple of seasons more no doubt as thats what nearly all 21 year olds do after the honeymoon phase (look at bobb and rico).

The only way he will change the opinion of the fans is to start performing. Until then he won’t as he is very unlikeable and everything that fans generally don’t like in a footballer. He needs to concentrate on his game, stop gesturing to the crowd and stop going down like an absolute fanny at the slightest touch.
He does do a lot of typical Brazilian shit that annoys the hell out of me. I want all our players to flourish but even I’ll admit, I’ve been pretty harsh on him
