Old Maine Road photos thread

Wasn't there a rule around that time that there couldn't be any clash of colours including shorts and socks? It'd explain Whitey's purple ensemble as Villa probably wore white shorts and sky blue socks.

It was the 1st leg at Maine Road that Alf Grey fucked us over disallowing Kevin Reeves header.
Cheers. For correcting me.

I've still got a newspaper clipping , somewhere deep in my collection of City Memorabilia,of a red top newspaper, back page.....photo of Reeves scoring the goal that never was...
I never knew that Kevin Reeves was so good in the air,as an out of town Blue who wasn't attending games,it was difficult to form any real appreciation of his talents..City were just not in the news.at all.It was a difficult time to be a Blue..I used to order the football pink and or MENfrom a paper shop( remember them?) in Nottingham Town centre...and gleefully read up on the match reports... That's how desperate I was to get info on City.....

Anyway, back to Kevin Reeves,I highlighted his brilliant headed assist for Gerry Gows left footed equaliser at goodison fa cup final 1981,in the Paul Power thread, but I'm sure there is another Reeves headed moment.....the assist for Stevie Mac's brilliant goal at Wembley,in the replay...

Maroon shorts and socks in this one , that I do remember. Looks like Villa away in 1989/90 ?

My lad went footy training last night in a mixed up city kit, his sister laughed!
Told them i always mixed my kits up as a kid, home top/away shorts , because i used to love seeing the team run out in kits like in the pic

My favourite Kevin Reeves header was v Brighton just before the infamous Luton game. We thought we were staying up after that! Was on the pitch at end of the match at the Goldstone ground.

Is there any video footage of the "goal" v Liverpool. I don't recall ever seeing any. I've had a psychotic hatred of Alf Grey ever since and I'd just like some confirmation that this is justified!
He stole something from us that night.

I'm buzzing watching that footage
I've no happy memories at all visiting Brighton with City
Always seemed a long way to go ,to get beat,
Only done the old Goldstone ground a couple of times
Not set foot in the new stadium.

Excellent header by Reeves!!

It certainly was. It was also the first time Bluemoon got going properly. Some lads were singing it behind us and no one was really joining in. By the end the whole stand was. First away win in the top flight for four years.
That’s how I remember it. Someone, possible Kendall, said before the match we only win away once in a Bluemoon. That day was one of our best ever away days. The crowds had been building for years and we all wanted to see that first away win. It was hysteria.

Now here's The Rub...
Another Dennis conspiracy theory!!!

The "City!"documentary which older Blues will remember, produced by TV giants Granada....featured only the start of the 80/81 season with City at their lowest ebb...Big Mal and John Bond rivalry ,dull mundane music in the background as the camera s featured in detail, loss after loss...all depressing stuff....made us look like a club on its arse, crestfallen, going nowhere.

Now then...the season then metermorphized into not only a jump from the bottom of the league, to to upper mid table ; )
And..a run to the league cup semi final...And a run to the FA cup final....including those 4 big matches against the scousers Liverpool lc 2 legs and Everton quarter finals at Goodison and Maine rd.....but we only have,as far as I can see brief fleeting footage of those matches...
That documentary,in my book ..set out to make us look as bad as possible, and didn't bother to include the cup runs...maybe the tape ran out?

Why didn't Granada do a " City! 2 the sequel,... charting our brilliant 2nd half of the season..to balance out the full first episode?

They were not interested.

if that had been utd..turning a season round like that, with goals in the last min,6 goals in one game ( Norwich),no goals conceded in the fa cup run until QF..
The sublime Paul Power free kick,McKenzie absolutely brilliant volley..surely the best goal ever scored at Wembley.....if that had been utd there would be full length feature films!

I just think Granada, with the complicity of TV business man Peter Swales, did a job on us.
Made the club look shite, but ignored all the best bits.
Rant over.; )

What a day out that was ,wasn't it a bank holiday weekend
Like you say we thought we'd done the hard work and would be staying up

I too played footy last night in my normal mixed up City kit... Supreme Yaya/ Mancini era black and red stripes, with gold.. top,and a pair of white home shorts from the same era
Played like an out of form, overweight Yaya tho didnt. score,a few crunching tackles ,maybe 2 assists we lost....

April fools day, Villa chasing the title, City relegation cannon fodder. Great performances from everyone but notably - White, Ward, Reid and Lake.

I am sure the match was on MoTD or The Big Match as I remember seeing myself on the pitch at the end. Will have a look later and see if I can find it on YouTube.
Like you said, what a day. We got the midnight train to London and were in Brighton by about 9am waiting for the pubs to open. Convinced we were staying up after that. Just had to avoid defeat to Luton....what could possibly go wrong?
