Last Film You Saw

Execution and production 9/10, idea and acting soilid 3/10, Gosling at its late Gosling sacharine best. I knew I wouldn't like it and liked it even less after watching it.
Moronic movie that wants to be so many cool and smart things and ends being none of them. And I don't know what happened to Gosling, haven't made a decent movie since The Big Short.
My view only, of course!

So accurate!

Watched Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan the Ghost War - what a pile of shit ! A truly awful film noted mainly for it’s “tourist board approved” shots of Dubai and London with a bit of New York and blatant product placements. Sienna Miller chain smoked throughout the film - must’ve sparked up in every scene !
Struggled to follow the unbelievable plot, didn’t care for any of the main characters- even though “Jack Ryan” has been around a good few years.
Avoid : 3/10 (generous score for some decent cinematography)

Was expecting a lot better, don’t bother wasting your time unless you like tourist spots….

I found it easy to watch and passed the time. Not believable even for a second and the tourist shots of Dubai made me assume it was financed in some part by them. Also very strange to see someone smoking on screen these days. It wasn't good but I've definitely seen much worse

Ive not seen it for a few years but i do remember he seemed to be acting like he was in competition with or trying to outdo Caine.
I never really got the reverence for Olivier, apart from the Marathon Man and a couple of other things he was a bit too much of a Thespian luvvie. Probably born from stage work where you need to exaggerate your voice and facial expression.
If you are into Shakespeare on stage then I'm sure he was superb. I much prefer realism, the only time you should ham it up is playing a certain type of baddie.
My Week with Marilyn was on TV over the weekend (and on i-player). That has Branagh playing Olivier playing the Prince in The Prince and the Showgirl, depicting Olivier's frustration with Monroe and with Method acting. It feels like a decent portrayal of Olivier's not quite getting the difference between stage and cinema.

Just watched Michael. I would describe it as an enjoyable movie but not a good one. It felt like the kind of film a cult would make about it's founder but it was easy to see MJ's talent and both leads were good. Must have been weird for the actor playing Michael to be reacting to his own grandfather. Despite the big musical numbers at the end it did have an unsatisfying ending if you view it as a movie and obviously they left out a bunch of his later life.

It was very clumsy in foreshadowing the subsequent drug addiction and as much as Joe's insistence that Michael think about his brothers I don't even think they were named and you got no sense of them at all.

I think it's a very British thing to also be cynical of sincerity and I think only in Britain would another pop star wiggle his bum during another artists song and I think if you were on Jarvis Cockers side in that discourse there is a lot to find unintentionally funny.

It was also mad to think (assuming it's true) that Jackson was making Thriller whilst living with his parents. He remains an intriguing character for obvious reasons and whilst I don't think the controversy around his accusations will ever been truly resolved the film did seem to be going out of its way to demonstrate how child like he was so much so that it wasnt clear how old he was in any of the segments (unless you were keeping track of the dates).

I also felt a little bit sorry for Antoine Fuqua directing. There were a few moments that demonstrated it was being filmed by a proper director but other times it felt like a commercial. He is a little inconsistent as a film maker but at his best his films have a big of weight and grit. I guess though that this might not have been the project for it but Joe Jackson could have been a classic villain with a big of Fuqua Flair. The film told you he was terrifying rather than showing you except for a couple of bits at the beginning. In summary much more enjoyable than I was expecting but also very unsatisfying

An oldie, Bonnie and Clyde. Dunaway and Beatty are exponentially more attractive than the real life outlaws but I guess they were big box-office draws at the time. Some good one liners, especially liked Clyde's withering take on the sleepy town where Bonnie lives - 'what do you do for fun here, listen to the grass grow?'. Some memorable cameos from 2 Gene's - Hackman and Wilder, too. 7.5/10
