The occasional supporter might be satisfied with the win, but after the horror show in Australia, five-day matches are needed and not just for commercial reasons. The players themselves need to play more so as to better understand what is required at this level and only then can the management appraise the squad.

I read something last week saying that they think the two competitions will merge and play 20/20. Essentially the Blast is badly attended unless it's Surrey, rival games and the later rounds, and has been for a while. First match of the season at Lords was largely empty.

The players prefer the county naming instead of the Hundred, but the Hundred has the money now - they'll merge to form a smaller number of sides but will play 20/20 to fit everywhere else.

What it will then lead to is permanently two-tier counties, those with a sloggit team and those without.
