They held Suarez when he wanted to go and he did well for them for the season. Fortunately just not well enough to win the title. I reckon Sterling has a different mentality though and doubt he'd be as good under those circumstances.

Think this puts an end to all that bollocks that's been spouted on here about us and Liverpool having agreed a fee ages ago and this is just playing to the fans and media. City won't be fucked over a barrel for 50 million.

The club are absolutely right on their stance here. The player wants to go, is refusing to train, travel on tour, play for the manager and made it abundantly clear that he won't be signing a new deal. So why would we rashly go in with a 50m bid? Liverpool won't keep him around the place for much longer as his position is already nearing untenable.
Their only option is to accept our 35+5million bid and get him out of there. This puts us in a great position as we save 15 or so million which can greatly help us with regards to Pogba and KDB.
I know the headline regarding us refusing to bid again for Sterling is alarming at first but we simply don't need to bid again.

Fine line when it comes down to naivity. Yes right now logic is that his position is becoming or has already become 'untenable'. However this does not mean we should be complacent or arrogant in negotiations.

Throughout history, players have done dramatic u-turns. You really think if Sterling came out tomorrow with a huge public apology to all Liverpool fans admitting he's been young, naive and poorly advised (and even considered parting company with Ward), that he's seeking support from Steve Peters and other welfare staff and has personally apologised to Rodgers assuring him of a change of heart and perspective and hence signs a new improved 5 year contract - that Liverpool's supporter base are going park up outside his house and continue abusing him? Are they bollocks. In the same way as Utd's 'global' fickle fan base still cheer on Rooney and many on her still cheered on tevez and toure.

Im not for one second suggesting this is likely to happen but this deal needs concluding now asap before 'untenable' actually creates a situation where sterling has nowhere to go. We want this player. We cant afford to have another summer of missing targets.

You're probably right, but I still think Liverpool are the type of club (management, board and fans) that have that 'divine right', 'self righteous' and 'cut their nose off to spite their face' mentality and attitude that I wouldn't think it completely beyond them to keep hold of Sterling.

Some truth in this. Their whole mentality is stuck in 1983 when they were top dogs, and they are encouraged in this belief by the media and the army of ex-players, who are called upon continually to give their fivepennoth on the subject. That City have overtaken them is something they simply can't ever acknowledge, and they are easily bitter enough to bite off their noses to spite their faces. Noble aristocrats taking a stand against an ill-mannered oaf, they are not just Liverpool, but 'Liverpool Football Club'. Cnuts.

This.

There's nothing quite like it in football to bring the cess pit of journalists and media together than a transfer from the old top four to City.
Are there any other examples out there where a player has been hung out to dry so much for pushing for a move to a more successful club with a brighter future?
Had he been linked to a move to Arsenal, Chelsea, Utd, Barcelona, Madrid or Munich there'd have been a stampede to tell us what a great move for England's great hope it was and how he's only doing what's best for his career.
Fucking cockroaches.

It's a stare off, Liverpool need a striker, they want Benteke, which will cost £35m, having spent freely alreadily this summer, they will need the Sterling £ to fund any future transfers, I'd offer £37.5m as a gesture of willingness to complete the deal

It puts to an end the ridiculous, flapping bollocks of 'why didn't we just bid 'x' three weeks ago' which is the most common post on every fucking thread about every player.

The truth is that the media have no idea where these negotiations stand, & there is no point in people flapping about it.

Also, if it was just a case of 'pay whatever they want' & 'pull your finger out Txiki' 'we can never do these big deals' like some complete & utter morons keep suggesting, the owner would just fucking pay it & tell him to sod off.

This is City, doing this, not one bloke. The owner, the chairman, the d.o.f. This is how we are doing it & if that means the clubs won't sell, we will bid up to what the club thinks it's worth, to us, whether people here think it's not enough or it's too much, nobody cares, it's not them who are spending the money, it's the club/owner.

If they don't like it, take it up with Sheikh Mansour

I'm presuming all those members who spent months slagging Milner off don't want Sterling anywhere near City ?

Ha. In short, no. Liverpool are about to bank a rather large fee for Sterling. We got nothing for Jimmy. I half suspect the reason City are happy to let it play out like this and try and drive the price down is precisely because Jimmy fucked off there on a free transfer. The stories were about a year ago that Liverpool were in for him and he had spoken to Rodgers. Bad blood between City and the scousers.

This is very much the Barca model of transfer. Put in a bid significantly lower than the clubs value, add a few quid and then get the player to demand a move.
We saw it with Mascherano, Fabregas, Suarez etc...
However, while it may be a good business strategy, my reservations are we don't have the same pulling power and this is also a domestic argument.
For Liverpool this will be like getting a massive kicking off the a team they used to bully.

More politics me thinks. Can see a deal being done within the next few days, especially considering the bindippers are off on Sunday for preseason.

Lets see how they react to Sterling not turning up for training again today.

If I had more time at work and was better at putting my opinion down in type, that's what I would have liked to have said! Top fucking post.

This will say every thing we need to know if sterling does not turn in today!

Obviously I don't know for sure but I'm fairly certain that he isn't going to turn up today either. I think Liverpool leave either tomorrow or Sunday, which puts them in the position where they have to make a call on what to do next.

From Sterling's point of view, I think it's time for a written transfer request/letter which is sent to every major newspaper as well as to Liverpool. Turn the screws a little bit more and up the pressure that little bit more. At some point they will cave just to save the sanctity of their image otherwise who knows what Sterling is liable to say about Rodgers.

Ain't that the truth mate. If Liverpool are determined to keep him, then so be it, but they and their cronies in the media, together with the Mafia of loud mouthed ex-players are sure going about it in a funny way.

Surely the narrative from them should be to build him up, tell him how loved he is, how much the fans love him, how if he stayed and felt the same way next season then he could leave with their blessing etc.

Instead the lad is getting attacked from all sides - what purpose does that serve at all?

Personally, I'm not bothered if we walk away from this deal, as I'm sure the decision will have been made within the context of what is best for the club, and by people far more experienced and expert than me. I'm as sure we will have suitable alternative options on the table, and lined up ready to go.

I don't hold with the line which says we've cocked up time and time again in the transfer market. The only time there was a case for this argument was imo the summer of 2012 where we really should have consolidated our position. That was when Marwood was in charge. The following season we bought well enough to win the league, and last summer I also think we bought well given the constraints of FFP (I'm sure we'll see the best of Mangala and Fernando this season). I know most will disagree but hey life goes on.

I suppose if he hands in a written request, then it knocks off some of Liverpool's costs anyway presumably, & brings him closer to our value ?

There's one thing that if Sterling does end up here, the bad blood will increase between City and Liverpool fans, with lots of venom aimed at us by the scousers.
