Otamendi

Wouldn't we rather buy the 21 year old Englishman John Stones for this sort of money?

Otamendi is reportedly going to be valued at 32m and he's 27 years old.
27 isn't old for a center back. Not at all. Otamendi is also much better than Stones, more composed, more experienced. Stones would be a prospect, brought in as a backup to eventually fight for a top spot in a few seasons. We already have a CB like that: Denayer. Otamendi will bring solid, reliable defensive bite to the back line. With Mangala still young, Kompany unfortunately injury prone, and MdM old and possibly on the move, an experienced CB of Otamendi's caliber is more needed than some want to admit.

I voiced my opinion for what it's worth earlier on with regards Denayer.

While I fully understand people's concerns over Denayer, surely the opportunity to sign one of Europe's top centre halves is too good to pass up?

Are those in the Denayer camp seriously suggesting that we don't sign this guy based on the following I'd call facts, others may call opinions.

1, Demichellis is turning 35 and has played an awful lot more football than even he would have expected. Surely months as opposed to seasons left in him at PL & CL level.

2, Denayer has just turned 20, recently sign a 5 year deal, has one season under his belt in a near amature league and is very young to be considered even a regular sub at our level. Talented though he is.

3, Mangala has been encouraging this season but looked far from the finished article last season. For all any of us know, he's a 'Hull away' from regressing back to the promising yet raw defender we had last year. Hopefully not and I doubt he will. I'm a Magala fan.

4, Kompany was patchy at best last season and his injuries were the type of recurring injuries that can quickly become chronic or performance effecting.

Above are four reasons I believe signing Otamendi was a obvious call. City could be wrong, I could be wrong.

But based on those four fairly common opinions from last season it would be a big gamble in my opinion to turn down an opportunity as good as this.

Kompany may have his best most consistent season to date, Mangala may continue to improve and Demichellis may show no signs of age. Denayer may prove to be the find of the season. I hope they do, but it's certainly a gamble and no 'given'.

What is a 'given', that come the end of the season Demichellis will be near 36 and out of contract and Denayer will still be 20.

Seems a good decission to me. Not a hard one either.

I would love to see Mangala given a crack at left back alongside Otamendi, more out of curiosity as i have read he plays the position well.

It would be really interesting to try playing a back 3 of Kompany, Otamendi, Mangala. just to see if it worked and only if we were already 3 or 4 up in a game.

No need to worry about Denayer, he'll be 4th choice with Demi gone next year, which is an injury/weak opposition away from possibly starting for us. He'll probably get a great loan move this year to build his reputation, experience and skills even more, maybe to Valencia if they want him.

Number 30.

Can't believe some people not happy at the prospect of signing one of the best CBs in football!!
We will have 5 quality central defenders to cover for injury and suspensions and I suspect Pellegrini is looking to use MDM as cover for defensive midfield.
Awesome depth in the squad!!

I'm not all that surprised. He was a liability last year but if he's turned it round in those two games that's a real testament to his attitude. Personally I think Otamendi will take his position before long anyway.

I think it's bullshit. 1 game wouldnt have changed anyone's minds, especially after he played well agains the chavs 1 year ago. On the other hand, the 6 game winning streak where he and demichelis on gave up 3 goals and looked rock solid.... then the good preseason...yeah. Much more likely that saved him.

You comfortably ignored Fernando :)

I think Fernando will be massively improved this year.
