Refugee crisis

The UN reckons there are 9 million Syrian refugees displaced by war. 6 million of these are still in Syria, 3 million are in neighbouring countries. Does Merkel realise what her statement on asylum could unleash? The potential numbers are astronomical. This is just the beginning. Can't see a solution right now.

They were in a refugee camp in Turkey but had been issued visas for Canada, as the mother's sister had satisfied the Canadian government's requirements.

However the Turks wouldn't issue them an exit visa or otherwise process the necessary paperwork. So they were trying to get to Greece in order that they could journey on to Canada. And as someone else said, the Turks could quite easily have forced them back into Syria and may have been planning to do so. I don't think I'd want to take that chance.

Similar things happened prior to WWII when Jews trying to flee Germany couldn't get out because the British government wouldn't issue visas unless the German authorities provided exit papers. But the Germans wouldn't provide exit papers unless the British provided visas. So despite having the necessary financial support guaranteed in England, hundreds of thousands were murdered because of wilful bureaucracy.

But it's alright because we took a few hundred kids as a humanitarian gesture, but only one per family. So the few families offered a lifeline had to make a Sophie's Choice decision about which child lived and which would have to face up to whatever fate awaited them (which was almost inevitably a gruesome death).

Are you talking about now or historically? that premiss make me feel quite sick.

Don't waste your shame on me. It means nothing.

I'm sure you'd don't care for my opinion of you so why do you think I'm worried about what you think of me?

I'm reasonably happy with how things are going.

Cameron might make a small concession but it won't be much.

In general this is all looking very bad for the EU, with a lot of disagreement and disunity between member states. It could be the beginning of the end of it in its current form with a bit of luck, and that'd please me.

Lets put it another way, do you believe in clearing up your own mess or are you happy to just leave it to other to deal with the damage we caused?

We are facing what is probably an unprecedented crisis in post war Europe. It seems to me that we (ie the EU) need a more unified approach, and you are advocating or hoping for the opposite. It is really distasteful to me that you seem to be putting a political 'wish' on what is essentially a moral issue, much like the Prime Minister has done.

People are suffering and they need help.

There are 508 million people in the European Union. Even if every displaced person in Syria were to end up within EU borders we could easily absorb that 9 million on a temporary basis without noticing. The rest is all just politics and bullshit.

He doesn't care mate. I presume greed and envy have destroyed any last vestige of compassion, empathy and humanity that ever resided in his soul. It's pathetic cunts like him that are the problem with this country. I'd happily take 100 Syrian refugees to every person like him. We'd genuinely be better off for it.

You've conveniently not answered my question.
Do you think the UK would be problem free (from an economic viewpoint) if we never allowed a single refugee to seek refuge here?
You've failed to understand my concerns. Economic problems exist right now .... My concerns WERE not to add to those pressures. Is that clear enough for you? Put your pitchfork away

You may also notice I've changed my view

according to this article I think some of the blame should be at the feet of the UNHCR they would not register them as refugees, Turkey would not give them exit visas. There were people waiting in BC for them, they had put in a lot of work to privately sponsor this family as refugees and their application was rejected. Probably because of the red tape from Turkey/UN. This is just heartbreaking.

@urmston in what decade, mindset, other version of reality, does co-operation become a bad thing? Forget the price of imported bananas, the idea behind the eu is that we are all stronger together. And you want to leave that?

She has something up her sleeve,YES she's letting `Economic Migrants into Germany, but putting them in villages & small towns is causing unrest despite what the banners say.
I'm sure she sees them as short term settlers, the huge proportion are adult males what happens when they demand their families are allowed in.
This is just the start.UK needs to stay strong on this.
