Here, really, is my problem with this man. Now you can talk about windy conditions not favouring our game, you can talk about erroneous team selection, you can say Bony this, and Fernando that.
But not once do I remember us going in in a rocky position at half time (Liverpool, Spurs, Juventus away, today), then coming out of the blocks like mad dogs in the second half and turning the game round. And that, clearly, is a màager's job to do, when he's got the balls to do it. That is one thing that he, and he alone, can do. No one else. Over and over in their dominant years, Ferguson did exactly this with United. I hated the man, that's not the question, but he showed he could do this time and again. It's all very nice to look good when things are already going your way. It's another — and the sign of the great managers — to force things to go your way. I now don't believe that Pellegrini has that x factor, that will take us to the top.
I will never, ever be in favour of sacking a manager in mid season. It smacks of desperation to me, a last throw of the dice for teams that are seriously threated with relegation. It would be a bit odd to put us in that company. But there's no denying that Pellegrini looks utterly incapable of motivating this group of players in the way I've just described. We've got ourselves backed into a corner, really. We can't really sack Pellegrini, hire anyone genuinely class, then ship them out after six months because Pep's coming in. But we're going to look pretty stupid if, come July, Pep says "No thanks"…
