David Silva

Silva has a reputation is Spain for going into his shell when things things aren't going well. That remains his one weakness,[/B] and probably explains why he doesn't get as many goals as he should.
That's not to say that I don't rate him, or think that he's finished.

He was also lauded as the player with "the biggest balls" in the entire Spanish squad. Don't think he goes into his shell when things go poorly (e.g. the Liverpool game in 13/14, and against Italy in 2008 Euros; played ok in the disaster against the Netherlands 2 years ago, though his miss in an one-on-one had been quite incriminating for some fans ), but his lack of goals, particularly important goals, can certainly give that impression.

Not that it was much of a problem for me though. I've become accustomed to this for so many years that it has grown to be quite an endearing weakness to me. Probably not very shrewd but my favourite players have always been midfielders who pass well but do not score a lot of goals.

Goals aren't part of his game. That's just the way of things. He has a shit shot. However, he has sublime passing skills. It just appears that a lot of people want everyone e to be the perfect midfielder - can create out of nothing, can score goals, can take a great free kick, can take perfect corners, can track back (all the time), can head a ball etc, etc. Oh, and can give 100% of this in every single game, and recover from a mid week game in Russia to play on a Saturday or a Sunday. Not much to ask!

Tell me that you're joking, people, please. Silva? No balls? Hull away in 13-14, with our captain off the pitch? Silva's stones were clashing so loud you could hear them on the telly. Goals not part of his game? Long run last season with Sergio out in the lead up to New Year's Day? Silva scored regularly, because he had to step up to the plate and just do it. He was not tempted to defer to Sergio, and pass to him when he is so obviously, and so often, in a better scoring position.
Merlin's been quite poor since coming back from his injury, and overall, this is one of his most mediocre seasons for us since coming. It's a major reason, although not the only one, why we're battling for fourth place rather than first. That's my considered opinion. It's also my considered opinion that he is the best player, taking the last few years into account, to have played for us that I've seen, with the single exception of Colin Bell. I don't quite think, somehow, that's he's finished with us…

I certainly don't think he's finished. I would definitely argue against the bit in bold though.

Of course there's room for argument. Individual players have showed more brilliance in given games, even over a season, perhaps over two. Silva has delivered for us in game after game, month after month, for several years. It's on that basis that I make that judgement. I know there's people who'd argue that Kinkladze had unlimited natural talent (although I don't think there's many who'd want to argue that he applied it very often). Just out of interest: who's yours?

Are you a little bit of a Walter Mitty?
Far from a fantasist. Pessimist yes.

Please don't stop chaps this is very entertaining.

David says hi.

With the greatest of respects, you're the last person to be objective in any discussion involving Dave and his performances so the sarcasm isnt needed or called for.

By all means defend the lad and his performances if you genuinely feel its warranted but something tells me, he could be genuinely stinking the joint out and your opinion wouldn't change for reasons that are very obvious given the pic you have posted.

That said, he played really well again Saturday and was helped no doubt by the inclusion of KdB which allowed both him and Merlin so much more space and also injected some much needed pace into our attacking play.

I can be as sarcastic as I like. Just as others can be as idiotic or condescending as they wish to be.

With respect.

Haha, fair enough but again, forgive me and possibly others for not taking what you might say on this subject all that seriously given the obvious emotional attachment.

Enjoy the hospitality ;-)

Latest tactic of the knockers: damn him with faint praise.

There's a reason why a significant percentage on here rate him as the best player of the modern City age and put him up there with Colin Bell. Yes, even ahead of Kin, Vinnie and Yaya.

He needs a little more careful management as he gets older. It seems that every year he's on duty during close season, has a short break, then comes back to get his ankles rapped repeatedly. Or gets injured but is thrown back in because he's needed. There's only so much someone can take and still turn in peak performances every week.

This lad has a few more years in him at the top of his profession.

I'm sure I read he'd rather a squad of 15-16 players whom he trusts. I think there's going to be some high profile departures this summer.

So does this cover a Premier League situation, to which he has never been exposed?

Would you be happy with a squad of 15 - 16 in our context?

I suppose it can be considered legitimate to ask whether Silva is on the decline, given that his performances have been below the (incredibly high) standards he has set in the past. Personally, I don't think he is, and I reckon he'll thrive under Guardiola. I'd also be surpised if he isn't - together with Aguero and De Bruyne - one of the players Guardiola is most looking forward to working with. But I can understand why others perhaps think differently.
Any claims that he's 'finished', that he's only any good when we're 2-0 up, or that we're 'carrying' him at the moment are just plain bizarre though.

well, regardless of what bollox others may spout,
i for one love him to bits and always will do.
to have seen him play for the blues has been an enormous pleasure that i hope will continue for many more years yet.

finished my arse!

Regarding your question, I think my username might give you a clue..:-)

I think Dave is a better player than all of those. Of course, it's all about opinions though, and plenty will disagree.
