Marc-Andre ter Stegen

It doesn't matter if he's not quite as good a shot stopper, his ability with the ball at his feet will allow us to play in a way which will save many more goals than we lose because he's not as good a shot stopper.

Keeper like ter Stegen means it's easier to keep possession. Possession is the best way to keep clean sheets

Keeper like ter Stegen = higher defensive line, which means more compressed pitch, which means if we do lose the ball, our outfield players are closer together, they can press more effectively, and because they are covering shorter distances they can press with more intensity for longer.

More numbers higher up the pitch also means we can stop counterattacks more easily, and a goalkeeper who's confident enough to run 30 yards out of his box to sweep up a hopeful long ball over the top allows us to get possession back in their half quicker which means the other team can't get out.

In attack, having an extra player actually capable of being in the passing triangles under pressure means we have a man advantage and that translates into one of our attackers being free and that leads to goals.

In short, ter Stegen would have to be absolutely miles worse than Hart at the traditional goalkeeping stuff for swapping the two to be make the team worse, because the way we would be able to play with ter Stegen in goal would save us loads of goals, and let us cut out opportunities before he even got involved.

And honestly the gap is not so great. In fact a lot of the errors ter Stegen makes could be attributed to his playing situation - he only plays every fortnight in the cup comps, which is no way to be as a keeper, anyone would make more mistakes in that situation.

If there is an argument for keeping Hart number 1 then it should not be made about his ability as a keeper, it should be to do with his position as a leader in the team and at the club, the fact he's a proper City player who loves the club and has been here a decade, which is the kind of player we need around and the fact he's English and pep is supposed to want an English core.

But even optimistic Hart fans must be hoping he can improve his ability on the ball over 6-12 months of training with Pep - anyone who thinks he's gonna be able to don't straight away is delusional ("he just needs more options!") or hasn't watched him for the last 6 years in our goal.

Meanwhile if we don't bring in another keeper, pep will have to put his plans on hold. Because we can't play the way Pep wants until we have a keeper who can sweep and is as comfortable with the ball as an outfield player.
We will get done with balls over the top and joe is excellent on one on ones

It's not as simple as that. If that were true then it wouldn't be that difficult to beat Pep's Barca and Bayern, but that is farther from the truth. The concept is simple but executing it will be a whole different story.

Assuming it takes a while to get used to playing differently considering the fact all teams in the prem play over the top i would feel safer with joes vast experience of the prem and hope he can work on the rest of the game that pep wants

no Im saying replacing the keeper as opposed to replacing other players should be way down on our list of priorities. Pre season doesn't prove that as the team was nothing like the one that will play.....the midfield in particular will have silva, kdb and yaya in it at points whose movement/provision of options will be better along with Sagna, kompany (when fit) who again will provide better passing options than those that played in the friendlies........everyone was raving about the young lad who played centre half but on nu serous occasions i just saw him hoof it up the pitch to no-one when under a slight bit of pressure.......

The press comes from the front players to start with and the more advance midfielders....the whole team will be further up the pitch but the press starts with them.......our weakness will be balls in behind our defence where there will be a lot of room as it will be pushed up quite high (up the pitch)......ability on one on ones could also be crucial and Hart is superb at that.....

He deserves time to work and sort it out. I can not understand why people would be so eager to get rid of a superb keeper when there are clearly other players within our squad that ned replacing first (bony, Kolorov, Mangala, Navas, fernando are all included in that)
Mate, nobody is saying we boot Joe out now. We all want to give him a chance and he should get a chance from Pep. But I'm just not convinced that he would be able to adapt. If he can? Great, problem solved.

It's not going to matter if we have great midfielders with great positioning, the keeper can't hit the target it's all moot point anyway.

Everyone was raving about the young lad (Tosin), and yes it's true his composure could use a bit of work. But the thing is the kid is barely 19. He has plenty of time to work on his mistakes and moreover he could work on his mistakes on lower-pressure games while he's on loan or in cup games. Joe on the other hand won't have that opportunity. Pep's not going to risk it in PL games let alone CL games.

The Bundesliga is even more insane when it comes to counter-attacking. Pep even says so himself. I am sure Pep and his staff has already found a way to prevent counter attack from a long ball. There's a big pressure on Joe and if he fails in Pep's system, I'm afraid that people will turn on him and I don't want that.

Is gunn going out on loan? Or is he 3rd choice? I honestly think he is ready to play ahead of willy, at least in the league cup. He is 20 years old, he needs experience.

This is how Pep wants his keeper to play. You honestly think Joe can turn into this in 12 months?

Oh come on, you think Guardioa survived for three years in Germany, a league built around counter attacking football, if his goalkeepers were faced with 1v1 opportunities every time someone hoofed a ball over the top?

We won't get done by balls over the top because he'll come out and clear them, just like Neuer did for Pep the last 3 years.

Unlike hart who would stay in his box and have to face a 1v1.

And by the way ter Stegen is very good 1v1 in any case.

Some of the posts on here are comical lol .......no one on here knows much more than fuck all about Stegen since he's spent the last 2 years sat on his arse polishing the bench..... behind an average keeper in his 30's who was a nobody before having a couple of good games in the WC2014.
All the 'peps system' nonsense is just as funny..... his keepers get nearly as few touches in a season as Richard Wright did, you'd think they were Franco Baressi going by some posts.

Realistically will Barca sell a keeper who could be their no.1 for next 10 years?

I think not.

If they do sell, it will be for a huge fee. What is world record fee for a keeper?

What's nonsense about acknowledging that our new manager plays with a sweeper keeper? You sound like you haven't got a fucking clue, whilst trying really hard to come across as if you do.

Everything in this post is wrong. Why bother posting it?

Ter Stegen has played 47 games in the last 2 years. He's played every minute of the champions league win, and 2 cup wins.

Last season Neuer played over 20 successful passes per game. Hart averaged 4.

So Pep's keeper touches the ball and is involved 5 times as much as we are used to.

I mean honestly why even bother posting if you're just going to write a load of illinformed bullshit?

Really? I thought his post was spot fucking on, bang on the money as it were, nail on head

Many publications have his release clause at £63 million which would pretty much end the discussion.
