first gigs

My first ever experience of a live concert was the Winter Gardens in Morecambe in 1966, I was 13. The concert was one of those package tours that were popular in the mid to late 60s with a pretty strange mix up of different musical genres. Headliners were The Walker Brothers supported by The Troggs, Creation, The Peddlers and The Quotations.

I saw them in 1979 in Leicester.

Ginger Baker on drums. I remember being a bit underwhelmed because the only album of theirs I had was Roadhawks (which I liked), but I got the feeling substances had been consumed before they went on stage, cos Silver Machine, Urban Guerilla, Hurry on sundown etc, were all a bit shambolic!

I think the second band I went to see was The Police

I still have my copy of cranked up really high.

Never had the pleasure of seeing the Ginge in his prime: he wasn't in the band I saw. I saw a frail Ginger play a very short solo spot at a recent Jack Bruce tribute gig and it was a spine tingling moment.

did you really?
excellent.

were they any good?
All is I remember is getting there at 10pm the band came on 12 it was madness Wayne Barrett came on as a man possessed throwing white powder all over the place never seen anything like it only went because of the name me and my mate were bowie fans ! Ps was a young 17 year old at the time .

I think they once played the tiny venue that is the Wichwood in Ashton.

Can anyone confirm this?

Seems vaguely familiar ..... The Hawklords played Whittles in Oldham last month ..... Other than Nik Turner I don't know what other members from back in the day are in them still though.

Probably one of Nik Turner's offshoots from Hawkwind; his band Space Ritual I think. Dave Brock despises Nik and there has been a huge amount of acrimony between them since the mid 80s. Nik tried to claim the name Hawkwind costing Dave a huge amount of money in lawyers fees trying to defend his right to the name.

Back on topic, my first gig was Hawkwind in November 1981 at the Queensway Hall in Dunstable. I must have seen them over a hundred times since then. I'm a bit of a fan...!

Sorry. I think it was Wishbone Ash I was thinking of. Wasn't really into either but I believe Wishbone Ash were big in their day.

I'm sure ob1 will know.

Nope you were right first time, the Hawklords did play at Whittles last month I believe. I think there's only Harvey Bainbridge of the original Hawklords left in the band though. They were another band that started as an off-shoot of Hawkwind, ex members of the Hawkwlords and Hawkwind that were using the old band name used by Brock, Calvert (RIP), Bainbridge, King, and Swindells.

I was there ... but you had me thinking I dreamt it .... :D

I saw jean Michele jarre there .that was err a bit boring from memory

City were away at Swindon that game, won 3-1 with Sumberbee scoring for Swindon and Adie Mike getting the the third for city to wrap it up.

Swales chose to watch the pop concert rather than Brian Horton's first game as manager.
