Well to be honest van dijk isn't worth 50 either. I don't think either are worth more than 30-35. Problem is that doesn't matter as the market value for defenders in the PL are so inflated it's quite sad. As teams in this league have a lot of money so the clubs decide they won't sell over a certain point when they have a guy on a long contract.

Problem is stones transfer fee has made things even worse and now teams will judge all their defenders on stones transfer.

sadly giving stones 50 million has destroyed the market value for defenders.

We are part of why this is the case. Stones is not worth anything close to 50 million so now every club will have a 50 million price point at least

Tbh I think it started when camelbog was transferred to the rags.

But honestly why bother. It's not about how much you pay nowadays, more that you make sure you want to get hold of the player you want. And besides that you can only judge the fee when the player' contract ends. Than its time to look back and say: Has he been worth the money?

The amateur accountants on the Sterling thread last season were tiring. Many of whom seem to labour under the misapprehension that transfer fees are paid solely for ability.

If Stones' injury had been more severe then I'm 100% sure we'd be in the market. To be fair, we could well be and are just keeping our cards close to our chest.
