Where have all the Insects gone ?

Driving down the motorway the car windscreen used to be covered in insects by the time we reached our destination.
Last summer we drove home from Wales for four hours no sign of any insects on the windscreen, seriously could that be one of the reasons for the decline, the amount of road vehicles killing insects by the thousands daily
From AI:

While some have questioned whether modern, more aerodynamic car designs could be responsible, studies that included classic cars found the decline persisted, indicating that the cause is environmental rather than automotive. The primary drivers of this decline are human activities, including industrial farming, widespread pesticide use, habitat destruction from urbanization and deforestation, climate change, and light pollution. These factors have led to a dramatic reduction in insect abundance, with some regions reporting up to a 75% drop since the 1990s.

Spoke to a long standing Blue from Blackley last summer
He said the drive down to Devon from Manchester for family holiday used to be insects on the windscreen all the way...
He rang me to say this year...there were none.
Something is changing out there.....the Natural world is declining......and the lack of a dawn chorus, and no Song birds
..these are troubling times,.

5G 6G ..wifi is everywhere, fast connected and better than the last.....

But where Have all the Songbirds gone
Does anybody care ?

I do.
Government does not.
Makes me weep.Nature is everything.Technology isn't.

There seems little life out there now...

I care :( we can all do something before it’s too late we don’t want to leave our grandchildren and gt grandchildren a polluted planet. We have Trump saying ridiculous things like “drill baby drill” when wind and solar power can supply some of our needs

Education is key schools are trying to teach the pupils about global warming but every parent has to follow the same principles.

6G? You may be on to something there Truman. When that is developed, that will be the cause.

Or is it not down to pesticides that farmers use? That then leach into water courses?

In my reflection....in the 70s,80s even 90s....
Gardens were full of insects. Domesticated household gardens...
Now they are not.
That is nothing to do with Famers/pesticides.

They’ve been killed by mass production farming techniques. Pesticides - killing them off. When it rains, these pesticides are then washed into the watercourse - and it spreads. Less insects - less breeding.
It’s having a knock on effect everywhere - which is why colony collapse syndrome within bees has been prevalent for 20 years or so. Not a time when 5g or 6g or WiFi was in place.

Where do you think they have gone?

Dunno bout that there was two big fuckoff bluebottles in our house yesterday, the fuckers refused to fly out the kitchen door
Coz it was freezin, twats to get rid of.

Something else to blame motorists for then.

If it was due to traffic they would have declined decades ago given that they only have a lifespan of days. If it was traffic then the lower 20mph limit around Wales would have led to a resurgence, not a decline.

Also bear in mind that the vast majority of the land isn't covered by roads so any effect would be minimal. I think the actual total of land classed as "urban" is only something like 7% of the total, and that includes buildings too.

That doesn't make any sense. Why would it not have anything to do with pesticides? There is probably more of the land covered with pesticide than there is covered by road surface.

As per Chat GPT

“Many people have noticed this, and it isn’t just nostalgia. The main reasons are a mix of fewer insects and changes in cars and driving.

1. Insect populations really have declined

This is the biggest factor. Long-term studies in Europe and North America show large drops (often 40–75%) in flying insect biomass over recent decades. Key causes include:
  • Intensive agriculture (pesticides, especially neonicotinoids)
  • Loss of habitat (hedgerows, wildflower meadows, wetlands)
  • Light pollution disrupting insect behavior
  • Climate change, which alters life cycles and food sources
Fewer insects in the environment means fewer to hit windscreens.

2. Modern cars are more aerodynamic

Older cars were boxier, with upright windscreens that insects hit directly. Newer cars:
  • Have sloped windscreens
  • Channel airflow up and over the car
This airflow can carry insects over the roof instead of splattering them on the glass.

3. Changes in driving patterns

More people drive on motorways rather than rural roads
  • Cars are better sealed, quieter, and smoother, so impacts are less noticeable
  • Seasonal driving habits (air-conditioning instead of open windows) reduce awareness

4. Cleaner roadsides

Road verges used to be rich in wildflowers and insects. Many are now:
  • Regularly mown
  • Treated with herbicides
This removes food and breeding space right where cars pass.

5. Windscreen technology

Modern glass, coatings, and washer systems can make insect impacts less sticky or more easily dispersed, so they’re less obvious.”

Or it could be a government conspiracy

Everything is a conspiracy to Truman.

Zero critical thinking other than watching some hack YouTube videos and regurgitating it on here.

Actually there isn’t any regurgitation, it’s just posting it and asking others to watch, and do the critical thinking.

Oddly enough one flew in my front door yesterday but that in itself is odd, we are talking ones and twos. We had no daddy long legs this year not one.
I saw one ladybird and no greenfly on our roses (without spraying)) in 12 months

This year hardly any blossom on three trees only one of them had berries, today it dawned on me why ? It’s global warming the leaves had fallen in autumn but the trees are already in bud because of the warm days we had in December. If there is a severe frost we will lose all the new buds and the trees won’t flower again next spring.

So reduced berries will affect the birds next winter

Has anybody else noticticed the decline in insect numbers...
Ive been aware of it for years.....but it's getting a little stark now..
Does anyone care?
And what are the reasons for such decline?
Butterflies/caterpillars used to be everywhere. Now a rare site. Earwigs and millipedes you will find plenty of if you dig in the garden.

You have to be more specific about insects as there are literally thousands of types of species. I think birds and bats are becoming very dominant meaning less insects.

Stick insects are more common then ever in the South West. I see a lot less water insects in water holes. Hardly see pond skaters, whirlygig beatles and water scorpions anymore.

I did leave the sliding doors out the back when I went out for a few hours about 8 years ago. Came back in and put the lights on, there was a Death Hawk Moth above the sofa on the wall. These guys are no fucking joke.
