Prostate cancer

Lost my cousin to it 2 weeks ago. I'd flown home for funeral of my aunt (aged 93 and last of that generation). My cousin (from different side of family) passed away from prostate cancer 2 days after her. It's been tough few weeks family wise

Sorry for your loss mate.

I had my radical prostatectomy on Tuesday in Stepping Hill. It was a robotic assisted procedure. I stayed in overnight but been home since. Very sore around the ‘keyholes’ and can’t wait to get rid of the catheter but glad I did it. They managed to avoid the nerves so I should regain full ‘function’ in time. Few more steps before this chapter closes but on the right path. All the best to everyone who is going through this condition, directly or in support of someone. It matters, I can assure you x

Fantastic news that in England, if you are suffering from Prostate Cancer, you will now be given access to Abiraterone on the NHS.

I have been taking this for the last 19 months as part of my private treatment. My consultant explained that this is usually given as a second line of treatment if primary treatment fails, but that they were starting to give it to men in my position because it reduces the risk of re-occurrence. It has been available on the NHS in Scotland and Wales for some time.

My Dad had breast cancer 8 years ago, beat it but it came back a few years ago. He's got worse over last 2 years and now really struggling.

Me and family have meeting with consultant tomorrow and going through what is next. Dreading it, he's been going City since before I was born. I'm 42 now so he's seen it all. I don't know where to turn or what to do.

Sorry to hear that. Good that you’ve got family going with you to tomorrow’s meeting. All I can say is that you have to take it step by step. I know that this is the prostate cancer thread, but I think it’s more than reasonable to come here if you need advice or to just talk over anything cancer-related that’s troubling you. Best wishes to you and your family.

PSA steady at 3.6 so coninue with Active Surveilance, next PSA and MRI in May. Apparently in 2 yrs time when I’m 80 if my PSA is still below 5.8 and the MRI shows it contained I will move from Active Surveilance to ‘Watchful Waiting” with one PSA check per year, administered through my GP rather than the Urology Department at the Hospital.
