That, or he’s asked to do a different role for City. He’s a player and eventually the ones who take great pleasure in knocking him will come to their senses. :-)

I think he's useful off the bench for Southgate's style of play because he can be either a last throw of the dice, someone to drive up the pitch with purpose in the hope that makes something happen, or he can be a sensible game management option, someone who can't be cheaply dispossessed, which reduces the number of counter-attacks the team faces.

If you want to dominate possession and push up the pitch for the whole match, he's a great option as a starter. If you want pacy runs in behind the opposition defence then Rashford or Sterling are the more obvious choices.

Looking at some of the performances from those on supposed power house teams - Spain, Belgium, Germany and the like it's easy to see why Pep picks our Jack - hopefully he will be flying after some great moments at the WC despite having the proverbial school teacher as a national manger.
