I'm not. If we'd given him a role like he had at Villa then maybe he would've been a great signing, we all know he has the talent, but it seems we bought him as a left winger, and he's been poor, it's just not his position, he's not a winger.
Much better to have kept Sane for that job.
I think we (Pep )screwed up with Jack. He was never going to let him do his thing.

When he leaves I have this bad feeling that his new club will give him that free roll again and he will revert back to being that great Villa player.
 
I’d say he thought he was going to slot in centrally to continue as he did at Villa, whilst also having more impact due to the world class players in his new team. He was then shunted out to the left to provide ‘control’ and knuckled down without complaining and all the while trying to adapt his game to be top class in a new position. All in all i think he deserves a lot of credit for trying his best, without kicking up a fuss, and whilst constantly being doubted. It’s not his fault he’s a square peg in a round hole.
 
Personally, I find many opinions about Jack Grealish here to be inaccurate or exaggerated.

His career at City is not a 10/10, but it's just as far from a 5/10, which I would consider weak and disappointing.

7.5/10 sounds ok to me.
1 season: 39 games
2 season: 50 games (treble season)
3 season: 36 games
now: 26 games

Its not coincidence when hes fit hes mostly playing. Hes not always fit, every now and then few weeks out is a massive issue. You come back from an injury, fight for your spot, win it over another great player, and then once again, a minor but still frustrating injury sidelines you for a few weeks.

Just hoping hes not done just yet. When on form he adds so much to link up play, to hold the ball and thus to control the game. People see numbers (crazy high percentage of blocked shots too - indicates a relatively slow shot), but for City to dominate/control the game is really what makes us not only winning but to break many records and achieve crazy good win ratio.
And Jack is so good and beatiful player on the ball.

There are plenty of people either in the squad or in the club leadership who have had numerous opportunities to step in and cut him out if he's causing an issue but here we are after months of this behavior and there's no sign of it changing. He certainly does owe his employer professionalism, but he's either not being punished or the consequences aren't severe enough for him to shape up.

It is what it is at this point and there's nothing any of us and seemingly the people around him at the club can do about it. He wants to sit back and waste 2 seasons of his career, then so be it. No sense getting all wound up about it.

I think the day is long past when professional footballers can have anything approaching a normal social life I.e. go on the piss regularly. They are high performance athletes and the remuneration they receive dictates what they cannot do in their spare time. They may not have lives in their hands but they have responsibilities which closely approximate to this. There are many nights that I can't go out because I have limited financial resources so don't make me feel sorry for multi millionaires who can't go out because they must keep their bodies in an appropriate condition for work. If Grealish or any other City player wanders out of a pub pissed drunk at any stage during the season they deserve to rot on the bench if that is what the manager dictates.

As I’ve said, he’s been given a few runs, but then he’s broken down and has to get back in line. Has he EVER had a MOTM game? And, I do mean EVER in a City shirt?!

Meanwhile, Doku & Savinho have been tearing it up on the flanks.

I get that you might feel like Havk should be given a chance in midfield or inside, because (say) Foden or Gundo have not been cutting it, but they’re spending plenty of time on the bench, too!

If he can stay fit, he’ll get his chances. If he takes those chances, he will play. It’s that simple, so where is Pep making his mistake? In not giving him his chance? In not seeing his great contributions? Sorry, I’m just not seeing it.

Lastly, I have no “narrative” with any player. I call it as I see it, because I know almost every single one of them came from somewhere else and will probably end up somewhere else. I only care how they help my club win. The end.

My point is the likes of kev, gundog, bernardo, phil, you name it have repeatedly been given chances despite being terrible for the near majority of the season. The wide players have been better to be fair and may deserve that ahead of Jack, but why not in the middle where he played well? The others you quoted aren't spending plenty of time on the bench. They have started an awful lot of games this season, my point is Jack gets the nod in cup games. Does alright then isn't given a chance. Clearly Pep doesn't fancy him or things behind the scenes but we can only go off what we see on the pitch. You are wrong though, in my opinion he took his chances in the small windows he has been given, his reward has been to be on the bench next game.

David Silva managed to do it and many others still do.

Just show a little bit of sense and discretion , not coming out of a place full of Paparazzi or some working mens club where the locals are going to tell the world your in town.

And unlike Silva and particularly Walker who go up to far worse, he , Grealish has simply not performed out on the pitch often enough.

Perform week in week out and you can still get away with most things.

21/22: 6/10 (100m, already used to the league, but still had a below average first season, gave him a pass as it was his first season)
22/23: 9/10 (only KDB, Rodri, Haaland were 10/10 but he was very very good and definitely one of the top 10 players in the league that season imo)
23/24: 4/10 (extremely disappointing season, you’d think he’d kick on, but was shite, Pep looked annoyed with him in most games he played)
24/25: 2/10 (joint with Rico Lewis as the worst player in the team this season, Rico gets a slight pass due to age and academy product

5/10 average rating overall

Hes been a below average signing, for me what makes him a horrible signing is because of the fact that idiots blame the Great Pep Guardiola for Jack Grealish downfall “pep kills talented players” Don’t forget This guy has been bad in a great team.
 
Loved him in the treble season but that's all he's offered - showed a glimpse at home to Forrest but its time to move him on

Jack played all of that season at Villa before we bought him as a LW, and most of the season before. He barely played as a 10 at all after they got promoted as Dean Smith tried to shore them up defensively.
 
I think our marketing team would be able to provide data that would suggest he has been a very successful signing..

Really, I never realised. He always appeared inside when I watched match highlights. Was he a winger that would reach the byline as well or did he always cut inside?

He played inside left with an overlapping fullback outside of him and came inside pretty much constantly. He wasn't stuck out on the touchline all the time

And very much part of that amazing, record breaking cohort. The greatest team ever assembled. So not sure how anyone can say he didn’t deliver. He played regularly in the best English club side ever. How is that not delivering?

Honestly can't really say he "delivered".

On a financial level, he is the clubs record signing. Paid like it too. Hasn't lived up to that.

On a club culture level, he took Sergio Agueros number the season after he left. Hasn't lived up to that.

On a performance level, he had one season where he was genuinely brilliant and consistently impacted the game. I'm not bothered about G/A because players impact the game outside of the stat sheet, but the season before and the 2 seasons after, he spent the majority looking like a passenger in the team unable to make himself an impact player.

I'm not going to be hyperbolic about it and claim he's a flop. Transfer valuations are incredibly subjective and context is required in a lot of cases (we paid the release clause and weren't getting him below that value. Also, Ellaquim Mangala cost us more than every combined fee Lionel Messi got moved for)

I just can't really say Grealish has really lived up to the hype, as much as i wished that he had. Especially when you see the way Doku and Savinho have eclipsed him in a shorter time frame.

I still maintain he should have consistently played centre mid, but it is what it is.

Your evaluation of 21/22 and 22/23 is spot on, but 23/24: 4/10 and 24/25: 2/10 is way to harsh. When Grealish been fit, he mostly had good games, always working hard, just couldnt register a numbers. Been our best player against Madrid till 25 min when got injured again.

Every evaluation is based on criteria. If you take injuries into account in your assessment, Jacek's evaluation will be closer to yours. I don’t like considering injuries when assessing a player though, because I don’t know to what extent they are a matter of chance and to what extent they depend on behavior that the player can control.
