15 minute cities

But how are you going to do that. I'm sure it's already many times cheaper to set up an office in Uxbridge rather than central London, but companies aren't do it. How much incentive can you give them?

I don't work in economic development but off top of mind: develop work spaces near transport hubs and selling the area.

Once upon a time there was a very prosperous city called Birmingham, countless businesses were setting themselves up there and the capita per head exceeded London. The then Labour government didn’t like that all these new businesses and industries being so concentrated around this one city of Birmingham so started to “encourage them to different areas” …this well meaning intention killed a city in under a decade, if at first you don’t succeed try try again….

So you are saying it worked until the Govt of the time essentially pulled it down?

Indeed.

If it is unnecessary to travel more than 15 minutes why aren’t people already doing everything within their 15 minute radius? Cart before horse springs to mind here.
I shop 5 minutes away, I bank online as the local branches were closed, I commute to work, before christmas I walked as my work was 15 minutes away, but I have reansfered by choice back to town so on a bus 15 minites away
My GP is 12 minites walk away, I drink on town as most of my drinking mates live all over Manchester so we meet centrally but am 10-15 minutes walk away from a few boozers, I have 4 parks in walking distance and the fallowfield loop, my parents are 20 minutes walk away

Bar work, football and holidays I never need to really travel any more than 20 minutes away and is probably the norm for most people, this is just more normal daily life being blown out of proportion by the cranks and conspiracy loons.

These 15 minute cities are not walled and you can freely visit anywhere else, all a fuss about fuck all really.

We have a congestion and car reliance problem in this country and any scheme trying to gey more people to walk because everything is in distance is a viable option to look at,

It worked until they forced business to a specific area.

If people can do all their activities of daily living within 15 minutes of their home are they not already doing so? If not, why not? I can tell you it won’t be because the local council or government haven’t told them to. The high street is dying in front of our eyes, why? Because people most don’t need or want it anymore we have the internet supermarkets and retail parks. Local authorities have watched this unfurl, approving these monolithic shopping areas like they are going out of fashion, bereft of any ideas how to stem the flow of decline on the high street not realising it’s them killing it, yet now those same visionaries grasp the weeds of this romantic idea hoping to save their jobs for another decade.

Thank fuck I live in the countryside.

This has brought some controversy to Oxford where various RW groups rook to the streets to protest against them

What are they

Conspiracy nuts do not like them

Simply put, the 15-minute city principle suggests you should have your daily needs – work, food, healthcare, education, culture and leisure – within a 15-minute walk or bike ride from where you live.

Has anybody got any thoughts on them?
Works well in Europe. Reduces energy consumption. Can’t see why anyone would get in a twist about them.

Which is what I have already said, it's just another catchy tune that people vlogging in cafes eating their cornflakes have come up with.

Yes I know. But the statement is paradoxical because of that fact. Typically you are going for the low hanging fruit of hipsters in cafes when it has very little to do with the policy's origin.
