Urban village concept really I think. Ancoats is going this way.
that is a stunning comparison to make. (If it's intended seriously, which surely it can't be?)
And I was making, or rather parodying, the point that the conspiracy theorists are making. So if people think it's ridiculous, then I'm perfectly fine with that. It's incredible.
"Hey wouldn't it be good if we planned towns and cities so everyone can have access to the things they need without needing a car?"
"You'll never put me back in a ghetto, hitler!"
The irony is that @Rascal opened this thread questioning how conspiracy nuts could manage to twist and mangle a basic concept of convenience into something despotic, and several posters immediately took upon themselves to do exactly that.

Which is exactly what the conspiracy theorists are saying. That you'll be stuck in your local zone and will need permission to leave. Like a ghetto.Sorry, the parody was lost on me because the previous 8 pages has several people genuinely thinking "you don't need to drive" with "you're not allowed to leave"
But how are you going to do that. I'm sure it's already many times cheaper to set up an office in Uxbridge rather than central London, but companies aren't do it. How much incentive can you give them?
We have amenities as close as they want anyway, what do people want a hospital with all the specialist facilities within walking distance? That just isn't feasible and it's quite frankly ludicrous.
Urban development might sound catchy but in reality we already have it.
Who said hospitals with all facilities? That's simply not going to happen because of scarcity (financial and specialised surgeons etc..). I think you created your own straw man.

It worked until they forced business to a specific area.
If people can do all their activities of daily living within 15 minutes of their home are they not already doing so? If not, why not? I can tell you it won’t be because the local council or government haven’t told them to. The high street is dying in front of our eyes, why? Because people most don’t need or want it anymore we have the internet supermarkets and retail parks. Local authorities have watched this unfurl, approving these monolithic shopping areas like they are going out of fashion, bereft of any ideas how to stem the flow of decline on the high street not realising it’s them killing it, yet now those same visionaries grasp the weeds of this romantic idea hoping to save their jobs for another decade.
Thank fuck I live in the countryside.
