I think it all depends on age. People fortunate enough to remember the 60s think of the maroon turnovers as the "classic City kit" but the truth is we only wore them for 2 or 3 seasons.
People in their 30s and 40s generally think of the classic City kit as sky blue shirts, white shorts, navy blue socks. The 86 youth FA Cup final era, start of the Premier League etc. It's also the colours we've worn the most in our history - by far, over 80 years.
Whether we wore navy socks because it was impossible to manufacture sky blue ones for some reason, or they were all that was left in lost property, or whatever, the truth is we wore them for 80 years, the reasons a largely irrelevant.
Apparently we wore "Cambridge blue" shirts because it was a Masonic colour and we were ran by Masons. Whether that's true or not is pretty irrelevant to me. I have no attachment to the Masons and don't much care if that's the reason or not. The fact is we've worn those colour shirts for 100 years or more, so it's important we keep them. Same with the socks for me.
Also seeing sky blue shirts, white shorts and sky socks could be a number of teams - Coventry, Lazio, Napoli, Celta Vigo etc. But sky blue shirts, white shorts, navy socks, that is unquestionably, unmistakably Manchester City, no other team in world football wears that combination. It's unique to Manchester City.
