19 | Ilkay Gundogan - 2024/25

Way, way off the pace, a big worry, has his legs gone and the year in Spain has taken off the edge needed for the PL?

He needs to get up to speed quickly, hopefully form is temporary and all that.
I actually think physically he looks fine, considering. His movement is good and his stamina is where I would expect it to be

It’s his execution with the ball that is puzzling well short of where it needs to be, and today his decision making was uncharacteristically suspect, too

This is how I saw it. His movement ahead of the ball was far better than any of the other starters, got into some decent positions. But like you say, it was execution and decision making that were off.
Amazing how playing poorly, and knowing you’re playing poorly, can frazzle even the smartest football brains. Same with De Bruyne against Inter.

Exactly what I was saying to mate earlier, physically he actually looks OK.

His quality was lacking, and that's putting it very politely. I'm not worried though, he just needs a good moment and he'll get going.

I'd be more worried if he looked physically shot, but I don't see that.

Like I said earlier, he needs to be better. However, I don't have concerns about Gundo. He was the best midfielder in LA Liga last season and one of the best in the Euros. He will be fine. He needs to get used to playing next to Kova and Rico on the midfield. The synergy between those 3 was off.

The fact that he was getting into great positions and battling hard gives me confidence that very shortly he'll be back to his best.

Sti a great acquisition.

My personal prediction was that he had come as squad filler, starting in the league cup games, dead rubber champs league and the occasional prem start against bottom table stuff, with lots of late game cameos, taking pressure of the first XI. I did not expect him to start at Newcastle, but then with Bobb, De Bruyne and Rodri out, and Foden still getting up to speed, he has been thrust into the starting XI.

I hope it works out for him, yesterday wasn't a great showing, but let's not claim it was all his fault.
