I honestly think that if it hadn't been for the coronavirus, he would have been voted in again. There was some stat going round that a president has never failed to be reelected if unemployment is below a particular level (I can't remember what it was), and at the time, unemployment in the US wasn't too bad. Then coronavirus came along and loads of people lost their jobs. I think unless the economy is tanking, they tend to get a second term. So yeah, I wonder how much of it is a rejection of his rhetoric, and how much is just current circumstances.Who was it who said "it's the economy, stupid"? I forget.
But when it comes down to it, most people are selfish. Most people vote for who they think will deliver the best deal for themselves. And most people don't like higher taxes - taking *their* money off them - to give it to *other people*. They don't like *other people* telling them what to do. They want their own freedom.
That is why so many Americans are Republicans.
