2022 World Cup Discussion

Biennial World Cup - your thoughts?

I'm not in favor of this at all. I really enjoy the Euros - a biennial WC would almost certainly end this competition.

The World Cup is very, very special for me. A once-in-4-years chance at glory. My favorite tourney by far.

I'm from the United States though - as my name suggests - and local football (i.e., "soccer" as it's called locally) is insufficiently skillful to entice me. I do not watch the USA's Major League Soccer and couldn't care less about my home side's performance in the league (Seattle Sounders).

Going to completely spoil the season. A joke !!
Me - I love international competition and the World Cup is my favorite football event.

But yeah, something needs to be done - top footballers are dragged into club and country matches nonstop - with likely no break whatsoever - leading to unnecessary injury.

Going to be wank. Here endeth my involvement in the discussion.
I hope not Phil1... England (I presume that England is your WC home team?...) has a very strong side. I don't think that they'll lift the trophy - but I wouldn't on the other hand be overly surprised if they did.

My side - USA - on the other hand - is totally wank - but perhaps that's what makes me enjoy the World Cup. SInce local football is horrible (but improving), I watch international football. I'm a huge City fan of course. But for me... the World Cup is special. My favorite tourney still - by far.

England will not win the World Cup...

JJ
Yeah... maybe. But England have absolutely the best side going into the WC every since I've been following world football.

I'm, of course routing for, USA - (we'll likely go out way before the round of 4) - but England? With a bit of luck, I can see you lifting the trophy. Godspeed.

I was born in England but have lived all over so never really got into the flag waving proud of my country shit. I'll watch the games because there's likely 4/5 city players going to be starting.
If England was to win it then great, Lord knows the country could do with some good news and if its done on the back of City providing the talent to do it then great.
The awarding of the WC was a farce and corrupt though so I've no intention of spending any of my time watching any other games bar a passing interest in the countries that have our other players involved.

The English players (and those who play in the PL) will be exhausted. I think it will be a bit of a lottery and could produce a surprise winner. Perhaps Italy because most of the their squad plays in Italy which these days is a sub-standard league with very low intensity matches.

Who's going to lift the cup?
Emerging talents?
Side most underrated by bookies?
Will England finally lift the trophy?
How far will Italy go?
Injuries/upsets?
Winner - Spain / Portugal. Reckon it’s an Iberian year.

Emergents - Camavinga, Szoboszlai, Cherki, Esposito. Cole Palmer an outsider if he gets a good crack at the PL in the new PL season prior to the WC, but unlikely.

Portugal 12/1

England need the stars to align. A revitalised Sterling, a fully fit and firing Kane, Southgate to deploy Foden and Grealish correctly and together as LW / #8, and Baz Maguire to pull himself together.

Italy - Wouldn’t put anything past Bobby Manc. Semis, minimum.

Upsets - Sancho doesn’t get called up (for any two or three of Saka / Rashford / Palmer / CHO / Greenwood / Elliott).
Brazil always have a big stage stinker in them, as do France and Belgium. One of them won’t get out of their group.

Injuries - I have nightmares about one of the City boys picking up a bad one. We’ll have already had PL / CL Groups and probably maximum Carabao fixtures by then. Fatigue-related injuries wouldn’t surprise me.

10 months of mutual arse kissing to keep both sides sweet followed by all out war the very second a key player becomes unavailable. Its going to be carnage and get very ugly, and that's assuming the covid situation is manageable by then. I'd be looking forward to sitting back and watching it kick off more than the actual world cup if it wasn't for the fact we are going to be heavily impacted by it.

So the PL will start a week earlier and finish a week later than normal despite the mid-season break for the world cup lasting more than six weeks. The fixture congestion is going to be as bad as last season, if not worse.

Yes but the Qatari's bribed their way into getting the WC, and made lots of FIFA delegates even richer, so who cares about the players and clubs. Who cares about fixture congestion so long as upstanding individuals such as Sepp Blatter made a bundle.
