Think he can become better than Zinchenko, but he needs some time. Zinchenko was terrible in his first season, but 99% would have him back in a heartbeat. Gomez confidence seems to be at an all time low after a couple poor performances, but it doesn’t help when Laporte slag him off all game, constantly waving his arms at him. Needs more time to learn the system and build up his confidence. He was the U21 left-back last year with the most assists, there’s clearly a player in there. He’s arguably better offensively than Zinchenko, and he’ll learn how to defend properly, like Zinchenko did

Would like someone experienced like Raphael Guerreiro on a free in the summer, who’s been brilliant at Dortmund for years. Need someone consistent as Gomez is being eased into the team, and I don’t think Cancelo is the answer to any of our questions

Definitely better offensively than Zinchenko. Obviously it would be nice to just finally sign a decent left back though. Inverted fullback thing has well and truly run it’s time and is pretty pointless when your wide players can’t beat fullbacks on the outside to stretch the pitch against packed defences

Hey look, we're playing just as poorly against the rags.
I mean We don't Gomez tk blame now. Again Someone will bring Zinchenko here. People are rewriting history with Zinchenko in this thread. Its sad that nobody is calling out Laporte for shameless going on against own team mate who is 21 and learning his trade a new country. That guy instead of being was supportive was whining and making his displeasure felt on filed when job should have been as a senior to support the lad
Doubt Dias or Fernandinho or Kompany ever do that

He needs more time and game to adapt and his potensial will slowly be a good LB/M

We do not have the luxury to baby sit a player who has shown nothing to suggest he can be the answer to our left back problems. This team needs players that are up and running, and mostly at elite level......not gambles/potential who were playing out of position in a farmers league.

Allowing Zinchenko to leave for Gomez was criminal.

How many years did it take Zinchenko to get this kind of love? Zinchenko was awful for years at City, he showed nothing to suggest he'd be the fix to the LB problems. Or have we forgotten how absolutely everyone always kept saying he isn't a LB, he can't defend etc. He always gave everything and is a great personality but he had been babysat for years to learn to play for City.

I'm sorry but what you are saying about Gomes could have been just as applicable for Zinchenko a attacking midfielder with potential bought from the Russian league massive gamble that was.

Zinc wasn't the fix to the left back problem,he did a fine job when asked, as he had previously gained a bit of experience in the role, but there were deficiencies and shortcomings because ultimately he was brought in as a central midfielder.

We have required a genuine, instictive, left back for years......and i think it was fair to believe that such was arriving when Zinc was known to be leaving, something i had no problem with. The issue is the fact that Gomez was his replacement.

Okay that's fair enough. I'd agree with that. I do think Gomez could be a great LB, if taught, because of his technical ability and passing range
