24 Hour Party People

I was a huge Factory head and followed loads of the bands.

For all of their legacy, Factory made some horrendous cockups - not just with finances as has been well documented. They also missed out on bags of local talent who should have been theirs.

For God's sake, House Music exploded right under their very roof and they opened up a classical label whilst the likes of 808 State, Guy Called Gerald, M-People etc sold millions on other labels. "Ride On Time" was largely broken at the Hac and it went number one on some Italian label.

With regards to The Smiths, there was rivalry. I think Factory passed them over and they were certainly at odds with the Factory house image. Gretton once said to Morrisey in an interview "You're all mouth. At least Ian had the guts to do it"

i think the people behind ride on time were some italian house outfit so they were never gonna get released on factory, anyway it cant lace the boots of the song that they nicked the sample off, love sensation by lolleatta holloway which was an absolute classic in the hac.

Many classics in the Hac mate. They only got released as a compilation about 2 years ago, ,long long after the horse had bolted!

Yeah, that one. He's got the Hacienda brand and is trying like mad to milk it.

It wasn't brilliant was it?

to be fair to Factory, in those days it was prohibitively expensive to licence tracks for compilations. It's only been the last 10 years or so when they've started selling like mad that the record companies have realised that it's worth licencing these tracks out for very little.

Every time I go to Manchester I keep meaning to visit what was the Hacienda, but can never find it!

find the g mex, (think its called central now or something) you cant miss it. from there you should be able to see the city road pub, it was on the opposite corner but theres nothing to see apart from new flats!

It's that close? I was at GMex in late '07, saw the Manics, pretty good venue if a bit "makeshift".

Not only did they miss out on loads of local talent, what abouth the shit they did sign? The Wendys and The Adventure Babies for fuck's sake. Awful.

It's funny, I was only saying on Saturday before the game having a drink that if I was ever to go on Mastermind my specialist subject would be 'Factory Records'.

I'm reading Hooky's book about The Hac at the moment. Astonishing stuff really.

I adore this film! Another Hacienda head here, although never really got into the dance music aspect, would go regularly from 87 to 91, obviously then the bad stuff started happening and for me it died then.
Went back about a week before it closed for one last time, and it was like a time warp, all the old faces were there; as if we all knew it was our one last night in there.
I blubbed a bit when I sat in the cinema (interestingly enough Simon out of Trevor and Simon was sat next to me) and saw the recreation of the Hac - I thought they nailed that pretty perfectly.
Was about to apply for an extras role to be told I was too old :( So the people that appeared in the Hacienda scenes were in fact all too young to have ever even been in the place!
Furious at Crosby Homes for not keeping the original facade of the building which should rightly have been listed. Criminal waste of space making poncey flats out of it.
As a youngster, I had my 'Tony Wilson is a twat' phase but really this film made me realise we all loved and hated him in equal measures. He did more for this city's culture than anyone I can think of and that's an amazing legacy.

There's a group of people trying to get a Manchester Music Museum going; again if Wilson were here I have no doubt the wheels would be in motion for it, but without him it seems difficult for anyone to take it seriously, he had the clout alright.
