He was a disaster yesterday, not sure why he started if Ake was fit.

He didn't know what to do against Spurs’ press and he was caught out a few times.

Lost his head and was lucky with that yellow card, anything could have happened with a challenge like that.

Not sure he’s left back material, definitely not right now against the big teams anyway.

Get him some minutes at LCB against the bottom 10 and we’ll see him grow in confidence.

I’m sure he’s going to be brilliant long term.

Neither did Walker, who got turned by Bryan Gil, of all people, a couple of times. I just feel like he is not the one to blame for today's result. He is getting used to the LB position in our system and still doing great in most of the games. He was underwhelming but still better than most of the team in the 2nd half, IMO.

Have to agree. When you think about the goals that were scored. One on the break where Doku should have just dealt with it. One from a shot in a very central position yet inexplicably not a centre back anywhere near him. The third he’s not even on the pitch.

I actually like the fact he seems to keep his head in positions where bringing people down would be a certain penalty or red card. Laporte fell into that trap all the time but Josko is at least smart enough to know when to let people go.

He wasn’t great yesterday but when the entire defence looks like it’s chasing it’s own tail I don’t think that is the fault of any one player. Walker wasn’t any better.

He’s also absolutely not slow, half of the trick with speed is about relative positioning to the players around you and having the right body shape to get the extra yard. Foden is brilliant at this which is why he seems to glide past players despite not being super big or athletic. Gvardiol is still feeling that side of things out, but he has a lot of quality and I have no doubt he will be a brilliant signing for us.

Probably not a left-back but he's what, 21? And he's in his first season. Got more than enough time to learn. Has all the attributes and, unlike Mangala who had all the attributes but no chance of fitting them all together, has already shown that he's got a solid head on his shoulders and will become a more complete defender.

Paying €90m for a good CB prospect and then expecting him to play left back in a disorganised defence. Madness.

He won't develop into anything but a Jack of all trades in those circumstances. He needs to be playing in a CB pair in a back four if we're going to see a top player.

So, when can we call Gvardiol a flop?

There's nothing special about him..
Most people want to sell him, so just calling him a flop is almost kind. It will be interesting to see the upswing in City’s performance when he’s gone.

I do think he’s played at “the City level” in several games - Newcastle and Man U spring to mind but there are others. And during those games he slotted in well to the best defense in the world.

Also, defending is much more about the system rather than any individual skill level and it’s clear the whole system is having problems right now.
