He was at fault but then he should have expected some help/cover....the hapless and often clumsy Laporte could have done so.

Dinho never hides,he will have your back and never fails to give his very best - i won't criticise a man with those qualities and that character,he has earnt that right and is correctly seen as a genuine club legend.

Struggling to understand anyone putting much blame on him for anything that went wrong last night.

He's our fourth choice right back, and he's not even a right back, not just in the sense that Stones isn't (which is bad enough) but in the sense that, as near as makes no difference, he has no experience of the position. And he's about to turn 37, and he's thrown in to a CL semi-final.

Yeah, he looked a bit slow and uncertain, positioning wasn't always ideal, but I don't know what else anyone would have expected. Can't even really blame the club for not having more squad depth, when I don't think any club would fare any better if, of their top three picks in any position, two were injured and one suspended.

The choice was between putting Fernandinho on out of position, and putting on a hugely inexperienced academy kid into by far the biggest match of his career, with the potential of shattering his confidence if it went badly.

Our club captain took one for the team. He put in a big shift and did what he could. I'm not going to sit here and talk about how he could become a better right back.

At fault for the second goal but let's take a moment to appreciate the ridiculousness of it all. Thrown into a Champions League Semi Final off the bench, in a position he's likely never played before, against a speedy wonderkid over 15 years his junior. The fact he was able to hold his own is downright insane.

I also don’t think second goal happens if Fernandinho wasn’t so high up the pitch. He’d normally foul there, but I think he thought he was so high i the pitch that he’d be covered and it was early to take the booking.

He won’t be kicking himself because he got done with a ridiculous dummy, but that he didn’t ankle tap him to the floor.

Other than that, you’d be forgive for thinking he was a 28 year old defined pro at right back..

I felt the moment Fern had to go right back pep should have hooked Mahrez for Sterling. Or moved Jesus over to the right to help protect him. On the ball Fern is still very classy.

Set up the third goal with quality. Partially (probably unfairly) at fault for their second. But apart from that he filled in well and he's 36! Did a job, took one for the team. Can't complain really.

And yer can see what we are gonna miss when he goes - his play when out of defensive mode was superb. He's been a great player for us, and his replacement is gonna have to go some to match his contribution. He's in the same mould as Silva, Yaya and Aguero. The only one we have replaced in a somewhat like for like position is Vinny. He's one of those players who come along every twenty years.

I thought he was great. Barring that mistake against a clearly faster younger guy. His movement and decisions on the ball may have even been superior to Kyle or Cancelo's.

But that error still is his

I think you called it right in the Laporte thread. He gambled on getting tight and winning it early, just as he had done to get the turnover to set up our third goal

He probably assumed it was worth the risk with fully half the pitch between him and the goal and presumably some cover behind him that for whatever reason failed to materialize

Other than Kev he's our most "risk/reward" passer, which I prefer to be honest, so it was lovely to see him on the pitch. The goal was his fault but not his fault alone and when it emerges that Laporte was approached by shady people with suitcases full of cash prior to this game, don't be too surprised.

My first reaction was that the Vinicius goal was his fault. Having thought about it though, it was almost a carbon copy of the situation where he nicked in front of Vinicius and ended up providing an assist.

I suppose he could have took a yellow card by holding onto his shirt once he'd been turned but that all started in the oppositions half and he hadn't been on long. He still should have took the card but I understand the hesitation.

Regardless of that mistake, there was still a lot to do from there. It shouldn't have led to free run from his own half, all the way to the 6 yard box and a shot unchallenged. Laporte should have gone to close Vinicius down and Zinchenko should have helped make his mind up by communicating he was covering Benzema. That might have bought enough time to get Dias and company back in position. He might have found Benzima with a cross regardless, but at least that would have give City more of a chance keeping the ball out of the net on that attack.

What I failed to understand with the "error" was he didn't do what he always does, smile nicely at the referee and step across without ever intending to play the ball, he's made that his thing for years. I think he thought the same after the goal too, but Ederson could have done better too.

We can’t defend the mistake, it was his and his alone. Was still pretty tidy and done a job under the circumstances

Harsh - he got off a good shot which unfortunately was straight at the keeper.
Benzema scored exact same goal from twice the distance, but I’ll go with “harsh”…even though it was a sitter on his left, which is his preferred foot, whereas it’s Benzema’s weak side!

I’m not as enamored as some over Fernandinho’s stint at RB, either, but I’ll leave it all alone.

Anyone slagging Dihno for his emergency RB performance should give their head a wobble.
