Dias is a bit of a freak, isn't he?

It’s quite extraordinary just how comfortable he looks in almost every situation. There’s a level of control there that is so rare in modern defenders.

If you were to write a textbook on defending, you could use Dias to illustrate exactly what to do in every scenario.

Koulibally was the first choice. Anything else is revisionist history. So much so that when we signed Dias the internet introduction guys screwed up and forgot to change the name from Koulibally bro Dia's in one of their blasts.

Dia's was not available at the time we were looking for a CB. So it makes sense he wasn't first choice. But thank God for our good luck. I hated the Koulibally chase and was glad we failed. 29 year old coming off a down season is never the best choice of who to buy.

Kounde looked decent, albeit small for a Centerback. I was glad when the Dias news broke. His age and pedigree ( Captain, on the NT and only 23) all suggested to me that at worst he'd be good. I'm glad he has shattered both my lowest and highest expectations.

After his entry interview, I was sold. He was just too intense to not be a good player. :)

It's not revisionist.

Dias was a long term target and once he became available, he was first choice. He wasn't some last minute.com panic buy.

Given a choice between KK and Dias, I'm sure we'd have gone for Dias.

If there was someone we'd really have liked more than Dias, they'd have been even less attainable that he was until Benfica dropped out of the UCL - like maybe a Real Madrid CB.

Anyway, he's the choice we made and it's not luck that he is as good as he is: City knew they were buying a top CB. And real kudos are owed to Omar, Txiki and their staff.

Watched the entire match again. He is just so focused. That block saved a certain goal, he anticipated the pass and slid before it had even been made which meant his foot was there exactly when needed. He then applied a toe poke to take it away from goal, all at 100mph. Luck? I don't think so.
It was phenomenal anticipation but if I’m honest a little luck with the way he cleared it. The replays showed he tried to hook it away with his right foot, missed it, and it happened to bounce perfectly onto his left foot that he wasn’t intending to kick it with and looped away behind him instead of to the left of him as he wanted. Still amazing defending to get back in position the way he did and to read what was going to happen. But I can’t deny there was some fortune too.

The last replay angle at around 4:40 shows it perfectly. He actually missed the ball and got lucky!
