I've always thought he was overhyped before we signed him, but figured that Pep/Txiki must have had a good recommendation of him from Bielsa, seeing as they seem to get on well.

Well either they didn't bother speaking to Bielsa, or Bielsa was wrong about him. I expect it's just that the levels we need are so far off the levels that Leeds need.
