That's 2 quiet games on the trot now. Needs to do what he was doing against Villa and take the fullback on, he was superb in that game. It's Sterling's place he is currently holding so needs to be consistent if he wants to keep it.

to be fair in today’s game, no attacker stood out and we played quite slow. Two quiet games shouldn’t be enough to get dropped.... still hugely important to our game

I’d also say Sterling usually plays on the right doesn’t he?

Foden on the wing plays the Sterling role. Keep wide, let play overload on the other side and then exploit the space when it comes your way.

The only time he doesn't is when Sterling plays wide (like against Villa), and then he becomes the active winger.

It's a tough ask in games like this but he serves an important purpose.

We were very pedestrian in possession and that worked in Sheff Uniteds favour. Our full backs really slowed us down. I’m not sure having Messi, Ronaldo and Haaland up top would have done much for us today.

I agree. Besides the emphasis today was on defending. Walker and zinchenko barely got forward.

A quiet game but we played out from the back far too slow today to get any of our forwards involved enough and that can't be overlooked, made it very difficult for our forwards to get in any threatening positions on the ball.

Dribbling past players is one of the best ways to break up those organised buses. It's one of Cancelo's best attributes and a reason he's been so good coming inside. It's one of Phils best attributes too so would like to see him do it more often in wide positions.
Bernie and Torres were doing it and creating chances as a result.

I'd wager he'd been instructed not to do things like that.

This season more than ever we've become super conscious of conceding, and unnecessary dribbling might open a team up but it could also open your own team up to a counter. I'm pretty sure their late chance came from an unnecessary Dias pass upfield for instance.

Because of the 5 man midfield domination, it feels like we will continue to see the wide wingers seem quiet for longer periods.

This happened with Sane and Sterling in seasons past too.

When we had inverted wingers (not necessarily based on foot, but simply allowed to come inside more), the wingers were far more involved but the width was sacrificed.

Now winger freedom is sacrificed a bit, but the 5 central players have to make up for that, and the wingers have to be even more decisive in their moments.

Just harder for him to do it whilst stuck out on the left. Looks our best left winger but in games like today can’t help but think he’s pretty wasted out there.
