From winter on last season, Foden has had the hold on the starting spot. This season will be his first full. It has been great and not so great. He is a well known person, with disposable income and suspect personal judgement. His agent better set boundaries and ground rules. He can't, and the club shouldn't need to, as it is a gathering of professionals. He, and his agents, need to get it right himself.

He has a long way to go as a players. That also means that he has a lot of time to do something that hinders his career. Hopefully, that contract has a get-out clause for the benefit of the club.

He is probably the best young player in the world and he has now been told off by his manager and dropped. This is what happens in a world class team with a top manager. In an environment less dedicated to excellence, he would have kept his place. Ultimately it is up to Phil himself to decide, but he clearly needs a strong hand guiding him whilst he makes the decision.
