I disagree, his versatility is as much a strength as some will try and turn it into a weakness.......he needs to play where he is required to do a job that enables our team to function at its best.
Hell rotate between the wings and Kev's role.... Once kev starts being fased out foden will play that role fully. He's 23 by time he's 25 I suspect he'll have kevs role taken

He won’t nail down a starting place being Mr Versatile. If he could then he would be a starter every week by now. To me it means that Pep can’t decide on what his best position is - not in a bad way because he’s brilliant centrally and at RW - as opposed to seeing him as an option anywhere across the front line.

He needs to be a RW or a midfielder IMO, not both.

I think thats spot on, but regardless of position, I think the consensus is he should be starting.
i think he starts right wing when kev plays.... i think he starts in the middle against burnley with kev on the bench.

How many more years will it take for him to learn to “balance” his game? Pep has asked this of him for many years now and still nothing from his end to show that side of his game as being developed enough. After all these years if he still doesn’t have pep’s trust to play centrally and we’re now considering paying up to £70M for a new midfielder than that says something.

He can be a excellent winger though if he focuses on that.

I think he's pretty much there to be honest. That's why he's been played centrally. He was introduced into the middle of the park in the CL final. When he came on for Kev I assumed Bernardo would move central but that wasn't the case. As I said previously, he was controlling the game really well against Real Madrid albeit when they were battered and broken already but then still had the eye to slide the pass for Alvarez. Our goal in the final came down to him being willing to go backwards to come forwards. I'm sure most have watched it back a few times, but their defence panic when Gundo picks up the second ball and then push Foden backwards, but then their midfield loses its shape and Akanji stepped forwards which pulled Bastoni out and let Bernardo exploit that space. It was the perfect chess move. We made them watch the ball not the men and it was largely thanks to Phil.

The new system we have arguably places less demand on the "pausa" element of the role anyway. We need someone supporting Haaland and playing off him which is why Alvarez has been used. So Phil may have more freedom to play to his natural attacking instinct. I see this as the season he really steps up and shows the world what us City fans already know.

He won't, but I'd like to see him withdraw from the next England squad to focus on his form for City. He hasn't really performed for England to be honest. He gets put out wide, but he's never going to do what Saka or Rashford do and try and dribble past players, he wants it when there are two or three around him so he can twist and turn and create his own space. But he doesn't get the ball in those situations because only the other City players would dare play that sort of pass. So he's either benched or doesn't do much and it's probably incredibly demoralising for him.

And despite Southgate being happy to try Saka at wing back or Walker as a CB despite them rarely doing so for their clubs, Foden's not trusted in the middle because he doesn't play there for his club.

No point going until he's made himself a clear CM candidate. Rice, Foden and Bellingham in CM is the best combination for England. Get Stones tucking into the DM role from CB with Walker covering as he would for City. But we aren't going to see that!
Ive said it before..there is definately somat going on with England and Phil ..said it a long time ago.
He doesn't play centre mid for England coz he doesn't play there for his club....1 rule.

Harry Maguire is picked at centre back for England and he doesn't play first choice ..for his club.......Different rule.

Fwiw,... imo,...Phil Foden should have been playing centre mid ,for England at the age of 18.he was better than any other England midfield player ,at that age, bar, none.

I know it..he knew if..and it must wreck his head ...he has been sidelinded.if he played for utd or Liverpool .he would have be 1st pick centre mid.for Southgate without a doubt from 19.,possibly earlier.just like Pele maradona etc.Play your best team/ if your good enough your old enough mantra.
That's how Football used to be...

Double standards.cant let a City youth team supremely talented kid graduate dominate the national team..........why not Gareth puppet?

Getting into City's first team central midfield is different.
England ? He is the best midfield player we've got ,and has been ,imo ,for some years now.

Interesting season ahead.

When he wasn't injured or ill last season, apart from the run in, he was playing really well and was pretty much a regular week in week out. When fit in my opinion he should be in City's best eleven.

Big season coming up for him. With Mahrez and, particularly, Gundogan leaving, he needs to establish himself as a player that's impossible to leave out. For whatever reason, he was in and out of the side in the second half of the season. He undoubtedly has the quality to do so.
