I would put John Stones down as our greatest ever defender. Better than Kompany. He’s so underrated outside of city.

He deserves some love today too. On the ball, he was absolutely brilliant today, both with his long range passes but also just whizzing past the opponents, before playing it forward.
Not sure about this, thought he looked hesitant and the turning speed of the titanic on their first goal. He'll be rite though.
Prime Kompany around 2012 before all the injuries was as good as it gets. The fact he could comeback so many times after not playing for weeks and be our best defender in title run ins shows how great he was. Love Stones he’s brilliant but Vinnie was our greatest centre back ever

He shouldn't be called up for the international break
Stones is a top player when in form but is a bit inconsistent.
I mean, he hasn't had two great seasons in a row. Great in 20/21, then a bit ordinary in 21/22 , great in 22/23, then a bit ordinary in 23/24...
The good news: he is expected to be great this season. And the last month or so he has been excellent.
Anyway, he's a lovely lad.
Hasn't been playing much, so he has been brilliant this season for the limited minutes that he got. Deserves to be playing more because we all know Johnny is one of the best players in the world in his position when he is at it.

Stones on top form is our best defender. Absolutely zero doubt about it. Every single defender you mentioned played their best football next to who? Stones is the common thread for good reason.
The issue is his bloody fitness. But when he’s good, he has a solid case for being our best ever defender.
