he would look more comfortable without having to cut in and he'll be able to cross the ball which he never does on the left. It covers up his flaws a lot more and highlights his strengths. He doesn't have the technical ability to do what he wants to do on left imo unless all he wants to be is a pure goal scorer and even the goals are drying up on the left.
I do agree with that.

You only play a right footer at left back if the other options are injured, coming back from injury or out of form.

Unless you’re shit hot as an inverted winger, I don’t think it should happen further forward as much as I don’t at full back.

Sterling would be better on the right (Marseille away for example, even though they were woeful). But long term I think we need to be looking elsewhere.

He’d be in my list, and quite high up, for the big shake-up I think we need to our squad.

its very unfair that laporte gets dropped for one bad performance this season but sterling and mahrez can get away with countless. I guess pep will always have his favourites.

I agree. I think that applies to other players as well. Phil has a great game and immediately gets dropped the next.

he picks the same players regardless of form a lot of the time

what makes you think we should be selling him?

I agree with this. I don’t think Sterling is a good footballer, no matter the position. However, he certainly hides his flaws better on the right and I think we would see a lot more of the goal he scored against Fulham, where there was no 2nd guessing of himself.

What do you believe are his strengths and flaws?
Running at players, crossing and making runs in the box i would say are his strengths. Weaknesses are his first touch, his overall passing, his finishing, he can't cross with his left foot. He looks awful cutting inside as well. Basically outside of being good at making runs into the box he doesn't have any of your typical inverted winger traits. I think he needs to accept that not everyone can be that inverted winger and just accept he's better suited to the other side.

Based on his weaknesses, he should either be sold or not getting the amount of game time he is. Currently, he should be no more than a squad player.

As was posted earlier, there should be no sentiment if we want to be the best

Strengths:
On the right he’s good at positioning his body to make it hard for a defender to know whether he’s looking to play a pass inside with his left foot or take it up the line or into the box with his right foot.

On the right he was good at playing cut-back pass crosses.

He makes good runs, and does understand space in the box at the end of moves so he has a tap-in (that’s not having a dig at his tap-ins, it’s a genuine attribute).

When playing on instinct and if he doesn’t have to think about what he has to do, he can be really dangerous.

He used to lean back too much when shooting but has learnt to get his head and shoulders over the ball more.

On the left he was good at cutting inside to have a shot but now that’s snuffed out as defences just cover the space he wants to run into.

He used to be a good presser up high, that’s disappeared. He used to get back and help the full back out, that’s disappeared (and one thing people used to direct criticism at Sané for).

Flaws:
Some of the above that he used to have but doesn’t anymore.
He falls over far too much.
He’s got no trickery to get past players at all and a lot of the time just runs the ball into the legs of the defender and loses it or falls over.
His first touch of the ball when he’s running is appalling.
He hits the ball like it’s made of concrete.
Any time he has to think about what he’s doing he fucks it up.
He’s the worst player around when 1v1 with the ’keeper.
He’s so weak on his left foot with general play that when good defenders show him onto his left foot on the left wing (like WanBissaka), he may as well sit on the floor for 90 minutes, he’d be as effective.
All of the things he’s good on, on the right, he can’t do on the left.

Over the history of the game, the list of top class inverted wingers is quite a short one. I would have thought that having managed Messi and Robben, Pep would understand that it’s very difficult to be an effective inverted winger. It’s not the norm and few players have been consistently successful at it because you have to be an excellent footballer with exceptional close control. Those that have been the best in that position are ruthless, they know what they want to do before they’ve even received the ball. Like it or not, Mane and Salah are the current benchmark and while Sterling may be able to match them for goals, he is nowhere near the same level when it comes to pure football ability.

can you really sell someone who gets as many goals as he does though hes the only one of our wide players who actually know how to score.
