Is that because he’s a right back though? His natural instinct isn’t always to find a through ball.

If that was the case what in gods name was Pep picking him in that position for when there are better players we have for that job?

The best I can say about him in any position is that he is safe, to be fair to him it must be hard excelling in this side even the most seasoned of players would find it tough going.

Rico did his usual 6.5/10, but he’s neither this nor that. Needs to excel at something, because 6.5/10 isn’t good enough to play midfield in the best team in the world.
You can’t play at 8 or a 8/6 hybrid in this side if all you can do is pass sideways and backwards. It’s not his fault, he’s young and will get better but having Foden on the bench for him is fucking crazy.

He did a job today, as requested, but an attacking midfielder has to have an attacking threat.

The pace and ferocity of that will stand him in good stead. He drifted out of the game as Gundogan tired but came back into it once Foden arrived.

He was better than Kova and Gundogan, albeit on the day that's not saying much.
Kova won the ball back four times as often as Rico and made nearly four times the number of passes, too

Rico is great but 24 passes in 80 minutes playing central midfield for this side is just not enough involvement. Much easier to find space when you’re ostensibly playing RB and drift into the middle to create an overload

Kovacic was playing behind Rico and Lewis, so it's expected he'd have a lot more passes.

No way. Kova is one of our most important players now that Rodri is injured. Gets the ball back more than anyone else, puts in a shift defensively big time.
didn’t you get the memo? kova is now again complete useless garbage.

how did rico end up as a fullback? think i read he was a midfielder?

Rico was awesome again today. I am starting to feel that his position is better deeper on the pitch though as he was a lot less involved.

Nobody on the pitch was awesome yesterday and Lewis was one of the least involved on a pitch of completely average performers. He was almost anonymous.

He’s neither physically developed enough nor good enough yet for games like yesterday.

The sam was last season. Rico played few games at start and then disappeared.

Playing him in midfield while James is on the bench is Pep’s overthinking ping-pong

Lovely player but given the number of times he finds himself in goal scoring situations, he really needs to get on the scoresheet more often.

I just hope he has half the career of the last player for us to consistently get that criticism from fans. ;-)

Rarely, if ever, have I seen this comment about a full-back or DM, and that shows how unique his role is. If that comes, and I think it may well do, he will be at the highest world level. We also cannot underestimate the number of times we come up against opponents who have a rigid defensive shape.
