A new city badge?

I'm pretty sure it's meant to be an eagle. But either way, it looks identical to the one worn by the rags in the 1958 FA Cup Final - think Gary James said it was the Manchester COA for a brief period?

As much as I like the current badge, why oh why did they go for the ornamental star look? Seems strange, when every aspect of a club badge is usually loaded with symbolism.

Bees instead of stars!!

lol. I just got through explaining it is an eagle, and off we go again with the phoenix routine. IT DOESN'T EVEN LOOK LIKE A BLOODY PHOENIX!

For the hundredth time in the last year:

It is a european golden eagle, which was adopted by Rome, and it appears on the badge because of the XX Legion that had elements garrisoned at Castlefields. I mean, you think I'm making this up, or just not reading the thread?

lol. did you not know that the phoenix is a distant cousin of the european golden eagle.....
Remarkable bird, the european golden eagle innit? Beautiful plumage!

Thats the one, never mind our current badge 'representing City around the world' this badge actually has our name on it! No stupid stars that leave us open to ridicule either. If this badge was slightly updated and put on the shirt the way Umbro have done this year it would look amazing. This is Our City.

I think its a pidgeon in honour of Albert Square's flying inhabitants, no?

Can anyone tell me what the 3 stars on our badge are supposed to represent. I've never really thought much about it until now as I was asked the same question on Monday night an' was buggered if I knew the answer. It's really buggin' me now as I've supported City for 50 some years an' tho' always bein' a bit baffled by the eagle element when the badge was changed (as Noel G said "when was the last time anyone saw an eagle flyin' over Manchester") I've never given much thought to the stars. Someone put me out of me misery please!!

Who owns the image rights to our old badge? I had heard it was in someway owned by the Swales family. I'm pretty sure that I have read or been told that we are trying to buy back the image rights, but it is apparently either difficult or complicated to do. (either that or the current image rights owners don't want to sell?????).

To be honest though, I couldn't care less what badge we wear, City will always be City regardless of badges.

It's an eagle and it was introduced on a new badge by Manchester City Council in 1957 to encourage organisations representing Manchester to use their 'new' badge instead of the coat of arms. It's covered in past messages but when utd played in the 1958 FAC final they wore the Manchester City Council approved badge (not the coat of arms - they wore that in 1957, as we did in 1955 &n 1956). Many reds think the badge they wore was a phoenix but it was definitely an eagle and that same eagle design was used by City on some literature (handbooks in the early 1960s) and then became the template for the 1997 'new' City badge.

I agree about the stars but if we win the league this year they'll be accurate (and then we can add a 4th...).

All this is covered elsewhere on Bluemoon including a link that shows who owns what Trade Mark.
