A trip down memory lane around Manchester....

Chelsea Girl shop at Piccadilly. Relative of mine saw a mouse/rat hanging on a dress there once. Not surprised, even in the 80's it was dead dark and somehow unhygienic.

Yep outrageous prices as well, the Village Barber was next door as well where a lot of footballers went for their haircuts, they had a week long appointments waiting list, again outrageous prices for the time

It was next to The Village Barbers, which was the first place I could go to and get a decent haircut.

My mum used to have a place on Hanging Ditch at the front of the Corn Exchange that was a bit classier than a cafe but not quite a restaurant. Mike & George were regulars in there. Mike of course could talk for England but George was actually quite shy. They used to have the Model Railway Exhibition in the Corn Exchange every year and it was all hands on deck as we opened all weekend. Hard work but we could get into the exhibition for free through the back of the cafe.

Someone mentioned the barrow boys on Church St and they used to come in after they'd shut in the afternoon. "Big Louie" their leader was known as the King of the Barrow Boys and was, as someone mentioned, a well-known ticket tout. My grandad came into town one afternoon and popped in to the cafe and him and Louie recognised each other as they'd been pals at school.

Other shops that were part of the Corn Exchange that I remember were Harry Hall cycles, Brighams (the mountain sports shop) and the Lost Property Shop which sold suitcases and umbrellas.

Found this picture of it back in the '60's with that British Road Services building and the Hertz office.

I remember when "Legends" opened - used to go Thursday nights and they'd give you a ticket for a free drink when you were leaving so you'd come back again to use it. Soon changed to "£1 off a drink" - must have cost them a fortune with all the free double vodka's, whiskey's etc!

It's now Fifth Avenue or something.

Graduated to The Cypress Tavern which was over the road - still miss that place. Virtually lived there through the latter part of the eighties.
