I remember this sad day quite clearly.

"On 8th May 1979, a fire was reported in what was said to be the largest Woolworths store in Europe. There were around 500 customers and staff inside the store and in total ten people died in the fire, 26 were rescued by the fire brigade and 47 were taken to hospital.

It is believed that the fire was started by a damaged electrical cable that had furniture stacked in front of it. BRE’s investigation included constructing a 5m x 12m by 3m high test compartment and fitting it with a stacked furniture arrangement that represented conditions in the store. The test showed that a discharge of about 1700 m3/min (at 800 deg C) of very dense and toxic smoke may have been present two minutes after ignition by a match.

The store had no sprinkler system fitted. BRE conducted a number of tests to examine the impact sprinklers would have had on this fire, and to develop sprinkler systems that could handle large department store fires."
 
A fire in a dept store trashes the contents by smoke and water damage. Sprinklers can prevent the steel supports from buckling which would write the building off.
Soft furnishings at the time of the Woolworth fire would emit toxic fumes that would incapacitate anyone that breathed them. A tragedy that shoud never have happened.

Yew Tree was the school that Paul Stewart went to. I went to Wright Robinson in Abbey Hey and played for the football team, we were a really good side but we always got beaten by Yew Tree. He was a fucking nightmare to play against
because he was so much better than any of our side.

I'm guessing Paul Stewart was in my brothers year, then. Three years above me. I know the original members of local band James were in his year too.

A friend of mine growing up lost his mum in that….. sad.

Manchester in the 60s including Smithfield market, Salford docks, rail sidings, bus depot, factory workers, etc.

Had a lad in my registration class called Gary Stewart, Paul's brother maybe. Gary did invite me to some football award ceremony. Being a 15 year old girl I was not Interested at the time and didnt fancy Gary so said no.
