A watch as an investment

I don't think watches are a great vehicle to make money, unless you know exactly what you are doing and invest in something obscure and never wear it.

That said, expensive watches can be "cheap" to own. I bought a Rolex Daytona bimetal for £5,100 in 2001 and sold it in late 2015 having worn it very frequently. I got £5,800 for it.

Allowing for inflation and loss of interest, it was not free, but nevertheless it didn't cost that much to own really.

As an investment, I'd probably go for a Breguet, or A. Lange and Sohne

I like Audemars Piguet but most of them would perhaps be out of his budget. Not sure if they increase in value either but that wouldn't be my main motivation for buying a watch. I tend to get what I like and if there is any gain, that's a bonus.

I would question any claims on significant increases in the value of watches. A handfull of high end models might go up slightly but in general - expect significant depreciation even if it's mint.

need advice as my son wants to invest in a watch and as I and he know practically nothing about them I thought I'd ask you guys.

He's seen a hublot classic fusion men's watch but it's £7300 and I've never heard of them so I'm trying to put him off. Surely for that price he can get something that is better ? I told him he's need insurance and I think it's expensive to get batteries etc replaced isn't it
Take into account servicing and repair costs which can be very expensive. Mrs S's Rolex is away just now and the bill will be circa £800. That said, it has appreciated in price since it was bought. Wouldn't be my first choice as an investment vehicle.

He wants one because he likes it basically but I was hoping that if he bought a watch it would be one that wouldn't cost 7k and only be worth 200 quid if you know what I mean. Thanks guys

Rolex then mate. Some people think they are a bit naff, but the reality is they are incredibly popular and for the uninitiated, it's their dream watch. Ask a man in the street to name an expensive watch brand and 9 people out of 10 will say Rolex.

Submariners will ALWAYS be popular and for that reason, they hold their value exceptionally well.

I mean, look at this:

£6,150 for a 6-year old watch that retails at £6,600 and which you can buy new today at Heathrow for £6,000.

The original owner paid around £5,400 for it.
