A watch as an investment

Rolex then mate. Some people think they are a bit naff, but the reality is they are incredibly popular and for the uninitiated, it's their dream watch. Ask a man in the street to name an expensive watch brand and 9 people out of 10 will say Rolex.

Submariners will ALWAYS be popular and for that reason, they hold their value exceptionally well.

I mean, look at this:

http://www.watchfinder.co.uk/Rolex/Submariner/116610 LV/16940/item/80693

£6,150 for a 6-year old watch that retails at £6,600 and which you can buy new today at Heathrow for £6,000.

The original owner paid around £5,400 for it.
I really like that one. Love the green

Trouble is Rolex's are shit timekeepers, I got one for sales performance years ago, the fucking thing lost around 5-6 minutes
a week, the dealer, who was on King St then, said it's usual as they're 'Dress watches!' My mate, and my son in law, say exactly the same,
they've got them because of the undoubted Kudos and they are certainly very pretty watches, but get one from the pound shop
if you want to know the time ;)

I can't agree with that. They are certified to +/- 2 seconds a day maximum (which is still crap I know, but that's pretty standard for a mechanical watch). Anything worse than that is out of spec and should be adjusted / fixed. Mine is from 2003 I think and it's still accurate to a second or two per day, and I've never had it serviced.

Incidentally, my "daily wear" for the last couple of years has been a Casio Oceanus which I imported from Japan and it's a staggeringly wonderful piece of kit. It's beautifully made, really beautiful build quality, made out of polished titanium and syncs with the atomic clock wherever it is, and/or GPS, so it's never more than a fraction of a second out, anywhere in the world. It's amazing. I wouldn't regard it as an investment though ;-) It's doubtless worth buttons in a year or two.

This is what I wear away from work;

Cost me €375 two years back, and that was in a sale, down from €500 (which I wouldn't pay for a watch). Some of the figures being thrown about on here are frightening. Even that Casio Oceanus. I had a quick look on Amazon; $1500,for a Casio! Wow.

That's really nice jim

I find rolex over done now, with rappers shaking them in the camera and such. Patek Phillipe i would choose if i wanted a brutish watch.

The best watches i have ever seen are well beyond my means, George Daniels (R.I.P) made the finest watches i have ever seen, every single component is made by hand, he developed the co-axial escapement which Omega bought and is now at the heart of every single watch they produce. The closest i will get is my seamaster.

I have a Garmin Fenix 3. Set up to look like this but it is digital so if i get bored i can change it. Having owned one of these traditional everyday watches are redundant now, these cost sub £300 and do some amazing things.
